What should have been a memorable occasion in Sunday league football turned into one to forget.
Yesterday’s North Wales Coast FA Sunday Challenge Cup Final between FC Mally and Y Clwb at Bastion Gardens, Prestatyn, was abandoned after 72 minutes due to fighting among players.
It is also alleged that referee Tony Samuel was assaulted.
Y Clwb from Glan Conwy were leading 3-0 at the time of the abandonment and it is believed four players had already been sent off – three from Mally and one from the opposition.
Yesterday’s final was the last to be held as the Rhyl and District Sunday Football League is disbanding at the end of this season.
Llandudno Junction side Mally are record five-time winners of the cup.
The league will say its final farewells when Conwy Comrades and Rhyl’s Royal Oak meet in a title decider next weekend.
It is unclear as to whether the Challenge Cup Final will be replayed.
NWCFA president Bryan Roberts confirmed the association has received a report from the official on yesterday’s events.
“A disciplinary hearing will be arranged to deal with the players concerned and the clubs although they will be disbanded at the end of the season,” said Mr Roberts.
“The presentation of the cup and medals did not go ahead and a decision on whether a presentation will be made will depend on the result of the disciplinary committee.”
