Ffion Thomas won high praise from her manager Dan Gregg after scoring twice on her return to action in Sunday’s win over a battling Flint.

Thomas missed the previous weekend’s defeat to leaders Bangor 1876, but her presence against the Silkwomen made a major difference to a Cefni side which has now reached the heady heights of third in the North Wales League.

A proud Gregg said: “Sometimes Ffion goes under the radar and I don’t praise her enough, but today she was outstanding.
“She’s one of the best all-round players in the league easily and her stats show that.”

The manager added: “The whole team was fantastic today, from the 11 to the subs that came on to show our strength in depth. Up to third place in the league now after only being in existence for 1 and a half seasons! Incredible from the girls!

“Big praise to Flint also, the scores on paper – 4-0 and 5-0 – against them do not justify the performances they put in. Anybody that watched both games would agree.”

Llangefni welcomed Flint Town United to Cae Bob Parry the hosts looking to bounce back from a heavy loss to runaway leaders Bangor 1876 seven days earlier.

Flint keeper Rebecca Bott has the ball in her grasp

It took just 10 minutes for Thomas to make her mark by sliding Jen Cox in to open the scoring for the home team.

Flint responded well and could feel aggrieved when in the 38th minute a pass-back was adjudged against them in the area. Nia Ginnelly cleverly rolled the indirect free kick to her right for Thomas to slam into the net to make it 2-0.

Llangefni’s second-choice keeper Alaw Enlli Jones kept a clean sheet

Flint showed good spells, looking solid and dangerous on the break until the 58th minute captain Ginnelly played Cox through to get her second goal of the game. It was also Nia’s second assist.

Cox completed her hat-trick three minutes later, this time a well-placed pass over the top from Cara Hughes sending the striker through to notch her 19th goal of the season.

Jen Cox (no 10) in the box (where else?) adds to her goals tally

Assistant-manager Liam Ewing, in charge as Gregg was serving the last game of his ban, brought on new signing Jess Jones for some valuable minutes.

In the 78th minute, Thomas completed her brace with another cool penalty, her ninth goal of the campaign capping off a great all-round performance and sending Llangefni into third..
