Shannon Jade Jones scored a brilliant hat-trick for a Bangor side which led 2-0, was pegged back to 2-2 and then grabbed a late winner.

This was a top of the table clash where both teams went into the match level on points and unbeaten after three games.

With this being the first fixture for most since before Christmas, Bangor went into the match knowing they would have to work hard against a strong Sheffield Hallam side.

After a rushed warm up due to travel delays, the starting squad began to feel the nerves. Nevertheless the first half Bangor dominated, creating multiple chances and were disappointed to go into the break with many more chances than goals.

Half time saw Bangor take a 2-0 lead, thanks to a double from CPDM Y Felinheli star Shannon Jones, with her second effort looping over the goal keeper.

Shannon Jones was a star performer for Bangor

An interval talk from new Bangor Uni manager Gwynfor Edwards gave the girls the confidence to maintain the intensity.

As the second half progressed, Bangor continued to play some excellent football, with key saves made by keeper Mia Gleave.

More great action between Hallam and Bangor (green)

With the British Universities Colleges Sports (BUCS) rule of roll on, roll off subs, this allowed Bangor to make use of all substitutions; the starting 11 being given an opportunity to rest before coming back on to make an impact.

A key player and fresher to the team, Chiara Nocivelli, and Trearddur Bay’s Freya Davies made way after excellent contributions as Bangor looked to settle into the second half. Some lapses in judgement and tired legs led to Bangor conceding twice, with one unfortunate own goal.

Looking to bounce back quickly, Shannon Jones slotted in another breakaway goal with only minutes left to confirm the win for Bangor.

Gwynfor’s mini match report:

In very tough conditions, the team (and I mean the full squad) battled out a tremendous win. Everyone playing their part and keeping their composure – when many other sides would have lost focus.

Their energy from the first whistle to the last meant Hallam never really got on top, or time to settle.

Shannon took her 3 goals very well, but lots of others put in a shift that really symbolised where we’re going and what we’re about – you can’t beat a side that doesn’t give up.
