Steve Cooper will undoubtedly be a happy man after securing an extension to his contract as head coach of Nottingham Forest this week.
On this date 20 years ago, the Pontypridd-born, ex-Swansea City boss will have been feeling quite content too after playing a part in Bangor City’s 2-1 win at Connah’s Quay in the Premier Cup.
City fought back from an early setback to run out worthy winners at Deeside Stadium.
The pre-match news was that Craig Roberts lined up alongside Chris Moores in attack, while Chris Short began at right-back with 22-year-old Cooper in front of him on the wing, allowing Kenny Burgess to switch to the left.
Nomads took the lead 90 seconds in when defender Gary McCosh stole in for a free header six yards out from a corner.
Quay might have gone further ahead but chances came and went as Tommy Mutton and Stuart Rain caused problems but generally missed the target.
On 23 minutes the teams were tied at one-all. A Cooper throw-in on the right was headed home powerfully by midfielder Ricky Evans.
As the interval drew closer, Cooper shot across goal, minutes later Moores gathered the ball and fired on target but unfortunately at keeper David Walsh. In injury time a cross from the left by Simon Davies just eluded Roberts.
Showing far greater urgency after the break, Bangor forced two early corners, the second from a Cooper shot which deflected off George Horan.
On 53 minutes City built up an attack on the left which saw Alan Goodall cross high into the box but Roberts headed wide.
With a quarter of an hour remaining City substitute Lee Hunt replaced Moores.
And the move worked, as three minutes from time, another long throw from Cooper was met by Hunt to score from close range on his Premier Cup debut.
