NWCFA Junior and Intermediate Cups – Stan the Man is a hat-trick hero in Penrhyn Bay victory

NWCFA JUNIOR CHALLENGE CUP ROUND ONE REPORTS – OCTOBER 1

CPD Mountain Rangers 2 CPD Caer Clwyd 3

Report: Alex Philp

Rangers suffered heartache in the Junior Cup with a 3-2 defeat against Caer Clwyd.

The visitors started brightly with a goal from Jason Hession after just 15 minutes.

There were few home chances during the first half, the best effort coming from Rangers man of the match Ben Davies, whose point blank effort brought a magnificent save from John Wood.

Things got worse for Rangers after the restart when Connor Roberts doubled the away lead as he curled home from a corner in the 50th minute.

When Tomos Roberts made it 3-0 from a Keiran Kendrick corner after a hour’s play Rangers looked dead and buried.

However, with the introduction of four home substitutes the game changed direction.

Sub Dylan Owen pulled a goal back on 67 minutes and this spurred Rangers on.

Fellow sub Jason Taylor then hit the post with a superb drive but despite the pressure the home side couldn’t find the net until the final minute when Dion Griffiths got up well at the far post to head home, but it was too late to salvage the game.

Penrhyn Bay 3 Rhyl All Stars 2

Hat-trick hero Stan Farrell guided Penrhyn Bay into the last 16 where a trip to Holyhead Town awaits.

Farrell struck on 18, 81 (pen) and 87 minutes, Frankie Davies (40) and Maurice Stringer (51) having given the All Stars a 2-1 lead they held until the latter stages.

The tie was decided by a superb long range free kick from Farrell, who is now on four goals for this season, having netted 15 in 2021-22.

Bay could also afford the luxury of a missed penalty in first half added time from Callum McMillan-Howden.

James Pagett of All Stars was shown a red card after 44 minutes.

Rhyl Dragons 2 CPD Y Fali 1

Steve Taylor revived memories of his goal scoring glory days by putting Dragons ahead after 36 minutes of Saturday’s Junior Cup tussle.

A former prolific marksman with Point of Ayr, Rhuddlan Town and Glan Conwy, player-manager Taylor returned to competitive football this season after a long absence.

His goal separated the teams at half time on Saturday, and although Tom Jones made it 1-1 early in the second period, Dean Hughes provided the 52nd minute winner – his fourth goal in as many games.

Dragons have also now won four matches on the bounce.
