Trearddur Bay Football Club sessions for children with disabilities are proving very popular

Meet Eban, Liam, Bobby and Kian who all play for Trearddur Bay’s disability team

Trearddur Bay FC wants to open its doors to everyone.

And the Anglesey-based club has recently added another string to its bow – providing football sessions for children with disabilities.

Coach Chris Davies explains: “We as a club have been aware of misrepresented groups within football locally for a few years and decided we wanted to improve the situation on the island,” said Chris.

“It started with the ladies team, which are now competing in their second full season within a league.

“The players of that team were keen to see the opportunity for girls improve further so decided to start a girls section up which now has three junior teams in the league playing at under 7, under 9 and under 11’s age groups which is brilliant.

“The latest development is that of a weekly training session for children with disabilities. This currently caters for children between 10 and 16 years old and has seen around 18 children register so far.

“The interest in the sessions has been brilliant and we still have a few places available for any newcomers that want to give it a try.

“We’ve got a visit to Manchester United training ground organised so the team can train at The Cliff alongside the Manchester United disability teams and also a trip to train at Everton, followed by a stadium tour which I’m sure the kids will love.

“We have also been building bridges with MENCAP to try and help provide football for adults as the interest is huge.

“We will be at the Anglesey County Council’s insport series event on the 1st October at David Hughes Leisure Centre, Menai Bridge, holding a drop-in session for anyone that wants to give football a try.

“This event is for local children with any disability to come along and try a number of different sports to see if they enjoy it. It’s a great chance to try to get the kids involved in sport.”

Chris, who is also club secretary, added: “We have a couple of huge thank you’s to say as it wouldn’t be possible to get these things going without financial support. Firstly to 3D kids which kindly donated money towards the purchase of equipment such as football, bibs etc.

“Secondly to Hogan’s, who have been terrific in supporting the venture! They’ve sponsored the purchase of a set of new goals we needed so we can utilise another pitch for the team and have also recently offered to buy the team some club shirts that they can hopefully wear when we get to visit the two Premier League clubs.

“And of course, lastly, a huge thanks to all the children that come along and make it all worthwhile.”
