FAW Trophy round one 2022-23 – upsets galore!

We all love a good cup upset don’t we? As long as we do not support the victim of the shock result of course!

Well, there were surprises aplenty in the FAW Amateur Trophy first round on Saturday, with eight teams from lower leagues beating ones from higher up.

There will be fuller reports to come on some of these.

We’re going Trophy Ballistic this weekend folks…..

Caergybi 3 Cefn Albion 0

Where must this rank among the biggest Welsh Trophy shocks of all-time?

Fifth in tier 5 beating the top of tier 3? It’s got to be up there with the best David v Goliaths surely?

Cefn Albion won the Trophy back in 2018-19. They are at the peak of Ardal North East and unbeaten.

What’s more, they came to Caergybi in last season’s Welsh Cup and won 4-1.

The Holyhead side were praised for their effort that day, so what can one say about Saturday’s amazing achievement?

Goals from Louis Chapman (2) and Tom Hadley produced a monster upset and surely the best result in Caergybi’s short history.

CPD Cefni 2 CPD Llansannan 1

Caergybi were not the only team from tier 5 North Wales Coast West Division One to cause a Saturday sensation.

Cefni, who had lost four of their six league matches, turned over Llansannan, seventh in the tier 4 North Wales Coast East Premier and already conquerors of Cerrigydrudion and third-tier Brickfield Rangers in the Welsh Cup this term.

The man who can’t stop scoring, Jamielee Patterson, struck in the 73rd and 90th minutes to deliver a dramatic victory for the islanders.

Rhuddlan Town 0 Llanrwst United 0 (Rhuddlan won 6-5 on pens)

Magical result for tier 4 Rhuddlan against a quality Llanrwst United outfit from tier 3 Ardal North West.

The tie went to penalties and it was Andrew Symonds, the Town goalkeeper, who emerged the hero.

FC Queen’s Park 1 Penycae 0

The Park are such a good cup side, you cannot always class it as exactly a shock when they beat a higher-level team, but this win for the tier 4 North East Wales Premier Division leaders over their Ardal North East visitors is well worthy of praise, Jack Hanley with the decisive goal.

Rhydymwyn 1 Connah’s Quay Town 4

Bottom of tier 3 Ardal North West Rhydymwyn may be, but beating them 4-1 away was still a cracking result for tier 4 North East Wales Premier travellers Connah’s Quay, Pascal Gomez, Ryan Hewitt (2, 1 pen) and Kyle Reid sharing the goals.

Ant Zoezee scored on debut for Rhyd following his move from Abergele in the week.

Lex XI 2 Rhostyllen 1

Tom Huxley and Alex Palmer bagged the goals which secured tier 4 Lex XI a pleasing triumph over tier 3 visitors Rhostyllen, for whom Jac Lloyd replied.

Glan Conwy 1 Trearddur Bay 2

Although on paper Trearddur would have perhaps been expected to win this one, it was still a case of tier 5 defeating tier 4.

Glan have lost six out of six in their division, while Bay possess a 100 percent record of four straight wins in theirs, but still the Anglesey team operate at a lower standard.

Kaine Bentley and Mel McGinness were the islanders’ marksmen, William Martland responding late for Glan.

CPD Llannerchymedd 0 NFA 2

Another good outcome for tier 5, as North Wales Coast Division One East NFA took the spoils on Anglesey at tier 4 newcomers Llannerchymedd.

Niall McGuinness (pen) and Steve Falvey netted the important first-half goals for the Rhyl travellers.
