Cardiff Met 1 (Evans 30)

Darren Thomas was a hat-trick star for a Caernarfon side which rattled up their biggest Cymru Premier win since whipping Airbus 5-0 at The Oval back in December 2019.

Thomas scored twice against the Wingmakers that day and this afternoon went one better as the Canaries made it two wins out of three this season.

Met had won their opening two matches, whereas Huw Griffiths side lost 1-0 at Haverfordwest before seeing off Pontypridd Town 2-0 at home.

The students’ first pair of games had seen them defeat Connah’s Quay Nomads 2-0 and triumph 4-0 at Aberystwyth.

So the Cofis were taking on a team very much in-form today and deserve massive credit for recording such an emphatic win which puts them third in the table.

Town took a third-minute lead when Laurie Bell played a long ball forward which found Ben Wynne, whose tame, low strike still carried enough to get past keeper Alex Lang and reach the net.

Iwan Cartwright missed a great opportunity to make it two when he headed off target at the back post from a Rob Hughes corner.

Caernarfon did double their advantage on 25 minutes when Josef Faux’s shot was kept out by the foot of Lang, but from the rebound Wynne’s strike went in with the help of a Met defender’s head.

The visitors rallied, Chris Craven’s looping effort hitting the bar before Eliot Evans reduced the arrears when he was given too much space to fire in left-footed from outside the box.

Three minutes before the break Thomas made it 3-1 when he latched onto a Noah Edwards hoist forward and beautifully lobbed keeper Lang left-footed to score.

Half-time: 3-1

Caernarfon were pretty much home and dry in the 73rd minute when Thomas’ effort came back off the post, hit keeper Lang and went in.

The goal has been recorded by the league as an OG by Lang, but it was all down to the brilliance of Thomas.

Osian Evans drilled across the face of goal before Thomas completed his treble in the 88th minute.

Cartwright fed the ball to Thomas into the box and the “Cofi Messi” curled in an absolute cracker left-footed to apply the icing on the cake.
