The 2022-23 Bob Brodie goalscorers competition is back – and guess who is leading?

Almost a month into the new campaign it is time to look at the early standings in the annual Bob Brodie Trophy.

The competition takes place each season in honour of Bob, a popular former footballer and manager on Anglesey who sadly passed away in 2011.

Now into its 12th season – although one was completely wiped out due to Covid – the trophy recognises the leading goalscorer in Anglesey senior football. Only players representing Ynys Môn based clubs qualify.

Last season saw a two-horse race between Bodedern Athletic pair Marc Evans, who was crowned the winner with 68 goals, and the prolific Asa Thomas, who netted 58 times.

And it is no surprise to see this duo commanding the top places again early in 2022-23.

Evans, known as Logs, has scored 11 goals so far, all for Bodedern, who he left this week to join Trearddur Bay in the tier 5 North Wales Coast West League, where he is reunited with fellow deadly finisher Asa.

Thomas has bagged 10, all for the Bay, where he is in his third spell and has amassed more than 200 of his 592 career goals.

However, an interesting new face in the Bob Brodie chart is teenager Connor Owen of Gwalchmai, whose early-season consistency has brought him nine goals.

Expect Matt Reynolds of Cemaes Bay, last season’s 50-goal star Louis Chapman from Caergybi and even perhaps the master himself, Trearddur assistant-manager Mel McGinness, to be performing well in front of goal this season.

Latest table (up to and including August 26, 2022)

11 – Marc Evans (Trearddur Bay – all goals for Bodedern Athletic)
10 – Asa Thomas (Trearddur Bay)
9 – Connor Owen (Gwalchmai)
7 – Matt Reynolds (Cemaes Bay)
5 – Marquis Holland (Llanfairpwll), Gwion Thomas (Gwalchmai)
4 – Anthony Williams (Llangoed), Callum Thomas (Menai Bridge Tigers)
3 – Jay Gibbs (Holyhead Hotspur), Chris Hughes (Holyhead Town), Jamielee Patterson (CPD Cefni), Luke Miles (CPD Cefni), Louis Chapman (Caergybi), James Ryan (Caergybi), Jay Finter (Llanfairpwll), Mark Jones (Llannerchymedd), Callum Hughes (Menai Bridge Tigers), Tom Kelly (Gwalchmai), Chris Jones (Bodedern Athletic), Mohamed El-Arab (Bodedern Athletic).
