Thanks for everything Mark Roberts – an all-time Denbigh Town great

A true legend of Denbigh Town Football Club recently announced he is hanging up his boots.

Striker and captain fantastic Mark Roberts has retired from football at the age of 36.

While best known for his long service and prolific goal-scoring feats for Denbigh, “Robbo” also wore the colours of Llandyrnog United, Buckley Town, Caernarfon Town and Corwen during a 20-year senior career.

His time at Central Park provided most of his footballing highlights, none more so than when Town defied the odds to reach the Word Cup Final in 2015/16.

Knocking out three Welsh Premier teams en route in Rhyl, Airbus and Connah’s Quay, the Cymru Alliance underdogs eventually lost 2-0 to full-timers The New Saints in the final.

Mark was also a member of the 2013/14 Denbigh Town invincibles which landed the Welsh Alliance League title under Richard Williams-Cooke. Their record was 25 wins, three draws and 0 defeats.

Blaenau Ffestiniog Amateurs would certainly rank as one of Mark’s most memorable opponents played against.

Not only did he score EIGHT in a Welsh Cup tie against the Quarrymen back in 2017, he also netted what he regards as his greatest goal versus Blaenau in 2019-20 – a speculative half-volley from 35 yards into the top corner.

His pace and uncanny eye for goal making him such a stand-out player, he has netted 35 + goals in a season on at least two occasions and before returning to Denbigh in 2018-19, he hit 63 over two campaigns for Llandyrnog.

A chartered accountant with a Masters Degree, even Mark would struggle to come up with precise figures on how many goals he has netted in his career!

Mark’s final season at Denbigh saw them compete in the new tier 3 Ardal North West and they just missed out on promotion.

Much of his campaign was affected by injury, but he still managed to grab a fantastic 22 goals in 28 matches across all competitions.

A Denbigh lad who gave 110% effort in every game, Robbo will be remembered as a player who led by example both on and off the pitch – and someone that the younger players always looked up to.

He is undoubtedly one of the most highly-regarded and popular players ever to wear a Town shirt.
