Cian Green’s sporting career has just received another big lift.
The 18-year-old weightlifting sensation from Penygroes competed for Wales in an international tournament in Austria recently and won silver in the under-20’s category.
A student at Coleg Menai, Cian’s personal bests are 135 kg for the clean and jerk and 105 kg snatch.
Before his latest success in Austria, Cian’s best achievements included becoming a Welsh champion in 2020.
He has also won the majority of his competitions in the Welsh age groups over recent years.
Asked about how he got into the sport, Cian said: “I saw that Canolfan Brailsford (in Bangor) did weightlifting classes and I needed to try and get stronger for my rugby so I gave it a go and here I am.”
Cian also won the Welsh age groups under-20 title in the 73 kg category in February and came top in the Welsh Summer Open as a senior the week before flying to Austria.
Best achievement so far?
Cian said: “It has to be Austria, when I represented Wales and hit a personal best in front of a crowd and it just felt special. It feels special representing Wales in a competition but this was my first ever international competition and that’s why it’s so special for me.
“It was a crazy feeling to win silver up against very strong people and to do it at my first international.
“My ambitions for the future are to try and make the GB squad, represent Wales in more comps and most definitely my eyes are on the 2026 Commonwealth Games.”
