Ladies team manager Ellen Lawson makes history at Denbigh Town Football Club

Ellen Lawson receives her award from the legendary Robert ‘Popsie’ Griffiths

There can have been few more popular end-of-season football awards than the one won by Ellen Lawson at Denbigh Town.

Ellen became the first female to win Town’s Clubperson of the Year accolade for her magnificent work with the Denbigh ladies team.

It was a really tough 2021-22 season for the side placed in the new tier 2 Ardal North League.

With key management and players leaving the club early on, Ellen bravely took the reins and did a fantastic job in difficult circumstances.

While the team failed to register a league win and suffered a few heavy defeats, some of their other games were close contests and they did manage a victory in the North Wales Coast Challenge Cup, beating Trearddur Bay 2-0.
Although results usually did not go the team’s way, Ellen has increased the squad and has had ever increasing numbers train week in and week out, such is her infectious enthusiasm for the game.

As well as managing the senior ladies side she has been overlooking the girls section, assisting some of the first team squad on their way to becoming coaches themselves.

With Ellen at the helm there continues to be somewhere in the town where girls can take part in the beautiful game.

Ellen has played for Denbigh Town for a number of years and was part of the North Wales Women’s League title-winning squad of 2014-15.

She was a fantastic help to Grassroots North Wales all last season, always willing to give us a positive word or two on performances, regardless of the result.

Ellen was also very popular with the Adran North league officers, who often complimented her undying enthusiasm for the game.

She received her Clubperson of the Year accolade from the great man himself, Denbigh Town life-president Robert ‘Popsie’ Griffiths at the club’s awards evening last month.
