A special tribute has been paid to a popular former golf club champion who died last year.

Ruthin-Pwllglas Golf Club have installed a wooden seat on the seventh tee, high above the valley of the River Clwyd, in honour of Kevin Glyn Jones and family, friends and members turned out for its unveiling.

Kevin, who died suddenly in 2020, aged 59, was a well-known local sportsman, a cricketing all-rounder who could hit sixes as effortlessly as he could drill drives down the fairway as a three-handicap golfer.

Golf Club chairman Ian Vaughan Evans said: “Kev Glyn as he was affectionally known to all of us, was for many years our Handicap and Competition Secretary and when Kev started playing golf, he was a natural.

“I remember the rumblings around the club about this new lad who had just started playing golf and was very good. The handicap committee gave him a handicap of 13 straight away. Kev struggled for a few weeks and then he started winning easily and soon had a single-figure handicap.

“He loved this golf course and he enjoyed great success here and won many competitions but the main thing I can say is that Kev was liked by everyone who met and played with him and he will be missed by us all and remembered fondly by this club.”

The seat with a commemorative plaque was donated by the P&A Group, of Mold, where Kevin’s sister, Sharon works and she and his son, Dylan, attended. Sharon said: “We would like to thank the club for allowing us to install this seat to commemorate Kev.

“Thank you for choosing such a beautiful spot and for the effort you have gone to in planting the area with daffodils – it’s lovely to think of them flowering here every year – and thanks also to my friends and colleagues at P&A for providing the seat and plaque.”
