Golf news: Josh pars in to hold off Alan’s challenge

Ruthin-Pwllglas Golf Club Captain’s Day Ladies winner Ffion Aykroyd-Davies with Club Captain Garry Teeson

A blistering start and an ice-cool finish by Josh Duckworth earned him first place at Garry Teeson’s Captain’s Day at Ruthin Pwllglas Golf Club.

The 19-handicapper opened with four straight pars before wobbling on the par-three seventh and ninth where he double-bogeyed, but steadied the ship and came home in style with a level par run of three-four-three on the final three holes.

That gave him 40 points on a day when some testing pin positions made scoring tricky and he pipped the steady Alan Padmore by a point after the former Ruthin Town footballer carded seven fours on his back nine.

Another ex-footballer, former Ruthin goalkeeper Phil Terzo, took third place after a disastrous start which saw him open with a seven and an eight but a much steadier back nine earned him third place ahead of a clutch of players led by competition secretary Steve Davies.

He managed par threes on the ninth and 18th despite flag positions that were treacherous though not for Graham Hardinge who knocked in a putt for a birdie two on the closing hole.

There was some sensational scoring in the Ladies section with Ffion Aykroyd-Davies rattling up an amazing 54 points to win at a canter from Nia Davies with an impressive 39 with Vicky Harrison third with 36.

Garry Teeson said: “What a great Captain’s Day I have just had. I would like to thank everyone for their help to get Saturday to work so well.

“We had 105 people on the course on Saturday who teed off over seven hours. What a great turn out and a big thanks to everyone and it was nice to see the clubhouse full in the evening for a few hours.

“The greens staff also did a fantastic job in bringing the course up to such great condition despite pretty much incessant rain all week ”

Other results, GUW Medal and Welsh Brooch: 1 Linda Cooledge 112-46=66; 2 Ann Ellis Davies 89-22=67; 3 Catherine Parton 81-14=67.

Summer League week 8: 1 Garry Teeson 30 pts; 2 Mike Whear 29; 3 John Vaughan 27.
