Llangefni Town women are rewarded for a season of tremendous promise

Llangefni Town Ladies experienced their first annual awards ceremony last weekend at the club’s presentation night.

Re-formed at the start of the season, the women’s side had two managers in place before the current one Dan Gregg took on the role and he has guided the team to an excellent four wins and two draws out of 17 games so far, with the final match of the season at home to Amlwch Town coming up this Sunday.

After some tough pre-season tests, Cefni came out all guns blazing when points were at stake, winning their first-ever North Wales League match against Welshpool Town 5-1.

They went on to beat Trearddur Bay (4-0), Holywell (5-2) and Llanystumdwy (3-1), while some heavy defeats against the higher-placed sides have all been part of the learning curve.

Fourteen points and still a chance of finishing above the bottom three – it all amounts to a fine debut season for Llangefni.

The following awards were handed out last weekend…..

Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year – Nia Ginnelly

Mine’s a double! It says a lot about the effort and dedication Nia has put into her game that she landed two team awards.

The midfielder and captain has led the side superbly, an excellent ambassador and battler for the cause.

She also scored a cracking goal in the 3-1 win against Llanystumdwy in January.

Top Goal Scorer – Jen Cox

What a great asset to the North Wales League she has been.

Christened “Cox in the Box” due to her goal-getting ability, Jen has scored 12 so far this season, including a dazzling hat-trick on league debut against Welshpool.

This aircraft engineer flies around on the pitch from first minute to last and is forming an excellent up front partnership with Ellie Coulson.

As for Jen’s sudden burst of pace, it is pure dynamite.

Most Improved – Cara Hughes

This is Cara’s first ever season playing football, but she’s been so impressive no-one can believe she had never played before.

Her improvement as the campaign has progressed has been immense.

Cara has played in 11 league games during the season and has proved to be a very adaptable defender.

Supporters Player of the Year – Megan Summers-Roberts

A very popular, whole-hearted player, Megan is a strong and solid centre back, good in the tackle and adept at clearing the ball.

She scored a long range goal for Cefni in their 4-0 home win against Trearddur Bay.

Megan has worked hard all season, organises the defence well and every single centre-half who has played alongside her has been inspired and performed well. Her communication skills are amazing.

Goal of the season – Siân-Elin v Holywell

This was a really special goal in a 5-2 win for the Anglesey girls at Holywell.

Siân-Elin picked up the ball wide left, cut inside and hit a right-foot swerver into the top corner that left the whole ground stunned.

It was nearly as amazing as her voice-over on the coach back from a long away trip! 😆

Grassroots North Wales Team Member of the Year – Elwen Evans

Not only did Elwen re-form Llangefni Town Ladies a year ago, she has since proved to be a tremendous ambassador for the team and club as a whole.

Her work with the media is first class; she collects quotes off the manager and provides match reports for Grassroots North Wales.

Elwen also regularly attends the men’s first and reserve team matches and her communication skills are outstanding.

She is also a player, featuring mainly as a substitute over the season.

A true diamond on the local football scene.
