Champions St Asaph began their defence of the Premier Division title with a home win which ended up far closer than they would have wanted.
Chasing a formidable 276 for victory, batting Brymbo finished up just 29 short of their target at Elwy Park Grove.
Put into bat, Saints had a nightmare start with brothers Mathew and Will Ryan both dismissed for ducks to leave the hosts 0-2.
However, a third-wicket stand of 105 between Nathanael Scott and Duncan Midgley steadied the ship.
Midgley went for 56 and the home side slumped to 159-6 before Gareth Goodson, signed up as chiefly a bowler, came in and cracked 60 off just 33 balls – eight fours and three sixes – in a partnership of 99 with Scott.
At the end of 50 overs, Asaph were 275-7, wicket-keeper Scott 112 not out.
For the Steelmen, Mohamed Nilam Jayman claimed 3-42.
In response, Brymbo were all out for 247 in 48.4 overs, Jayman an outstanding 116 off 86 deliveries.
Saints wickets were spread around, Jason Foulkes the most successful with 3-32 from 10.

Last year’s runners-up and three-time Premier champions Menai Bridge made a typically strong start to the season at home to Llandudno.
Tudno elected to bat and last season’s chief run-getter Sam Rimmington was firing again as he struck 81 out of a total of 220-9 off 50 overs.
Jamie Grimshaw added 48 and Tom Thornton 31 no in a decent batting effort from the visitors, Gethin Roberts taking 3-35 and Mathew Jones an economical 2-25 from 10 for the islanders.
Former Wales Minor Counties star Dion Holden shone brightest in Bridge’s reply, posting 113 no in a winning total of 221-2 in 42 overs.
Arwel Thomas made 50, sharing a 119 stand with Holden, and Robbie Jones hit 38 not out in an unbroken 99 partnership with the former skipper.
Skipper Matthew Thompson (80) and opener Daniel Williams (76) led the charge as Gresford set a match-winning score of 278-7 at Mochdre.
Kyle Brown took 3-50 for the hosts, who were then bowled out for 171, captain Matty Humphreys 50 and James French 35, Chris Ellwood scooping a cracking 5-30 and Jack Bunkell 2-10 off 5.3 for the rampant away side.
