NORTH WALES CRICKET LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION REPORTS – APRIL 23, 2022

ST ASAPH (12) 275-7 BRYMBO (3) 247-10

Champions St Asaph began their defence of the Premier Division title with a home win which ended up far closer than they would have wanted.

Chasing a formidable 276 for victory, batting Brymbo finished up just 29 short of their target at Elwy Park Grove.

Put into bat, Saints had a nightmare start with brothers Mathew and Will Ryan both dismissed for ducks to leave the hosts 0-2.

However, a third-wicket stand of 105 between Nathanael Scott and Duncan Midgley steadied the ship.

Midgley went for 56 and the home side slumped to 159-6 before Gareth Goodson, signed up as chiefly a bowler, came in and cracked 60 off just 33 balls – eight fours and three sixes – in a partnership of 99 with Scott.

At the end of 50 overs, Asaph were 275-7, wicket-keeper Scott 112 not out.

For the Steelmen, Mohamed Nilam Jayman claimed 3-42.

In response, Brymbo were all out for 247 in 48.4 overs, Jayman an outstanding 116 off 86 deliveries.

Saints wickets were spread around, Jason Foulkes the most successful with 3-32 from 10.
Points: 12-3 St Asaph.

BANGOR (0) 98-10 NORTHOP (15) 220-6

A dream start for Northop as they picked up maximum points at Ty Newydd.

Choosing to bat, the visitors chalked up 220-6 off 50, skipper Richard Walker hitting 47, Andy Poynton 44 not out and Thomas Hughes 40.

Young Australian spinner Saami Welsh took 2-29 for Bangor on his debut, Michael Hughes 2-31.

Bangor were then rolled over for just 98, Charlie Collins 2-2, Giash Uddin 2-5, Matthew Mullarkey 2-16 and Mark Poynton 2-22.

LLAY WELFARE (1) 197-6 MOLD (14) 200-2

Promoted Mold marked their return to the Premier in stunning style with an eight-wicket triumph at The Ring.

Inserted by the visitors, Llay were limited to 197-6 off 50 overs, Jacob Roberts best with 58 not out and Ethan Griffiths 30, Richard Deniz claiming 3-29 for the Flintshire side.

Mold openers Richard Crane (60) and Usman Butt put on a brilliant 109 for the first wicket.

Butt went on to finish 82 not out and John Crane was unbeaten on 44 as the travellers reached 200-2 in 40.2 overs.

MENAI BRIDGE (14) 221-2 LLANDUDNO (1) 220-9

Last year’s runners-up and three-time Premier champions Menai Bridge made a typically strong start to the season at home to Llandudno.

Tudno elected to bat and last season’s chief run-getter Sam Rimmington was firing again as he struck 81 out of a total of 220-9 off 50 overs.

Jamie Grimshaw added 48 and Tom Thornton 31 no in a decent batting effort from the visitors, Gethin Roberts taking 3-35 and Mathew Jones an economical 2-25 from 10 for the islanders.

Former Wales Minor Counties star Dion Holden shone brightest in Bridge’s reply, posting 113 no in a winning total of 221-2 in 42 overs.

Arwel Thomas made 50, sharing a 119 stand with Holden, and Robbie Jones hit 38 not out in an unbroken 99 partnership with the former skipper.

MOCHDRE (0) 171-10 GRESFORD (15) 278-7

Skipper Matthew Thompson (80) and opener Daniel Williams (76) led the charge as Gresford set a match-winning score of 278-7 at Mochdre.

Kyle Brown took 3-50 for the hosts, who were then bowled out for 171, captain Matty Humphreys 50 and James French 35, Chris Ellwood scooping a cracking 5-30 and Jack Bunkell 2-10 off 5.3 for the rampant away side.

PONTBLYDDYN (15) 246-9 PWLLHELI (0) 99-10

Jonathan Byrd helped get Pont’s campaign off to a flyer with a great knock of 90 in his team’s imposing total of 246-9 at Alder Meadow.

Asked to bat first, the hosts made hay with opener Alistair Roberts adding 49, Iwan Moore claiming 4-29 for the visitors.

Only new skipper Jason Underwood (31) and Ioan Roberts (26 no) then made any impression as Pwllheli were dismissed for just 99.

West Indian newcomer Stevel Rodney claimed the scalp of Underwood, but the better figures were produced by threesome Rhys Jones (3-20), Ryan Dunning (3-22) and Chris Moss (3-25).

An immaculate start for the newly-promoted Pontblyddyn.
