Teams share seven goals in fitting tribute match to the much-missed Sean Brett

It was a match befitting the memory of the great Sean Brett.

The crying shame is he wasn’t there to see it.

North Wales football, especially in the Bangor and Anglesey areas, had been in mourning all week following the passing of former Menai Bridge Tigers and Glantraeth manager Sean last weekend.

It was agreed that Friday night’s North Wales Coast West Premier Division match at Treborth between the Tigers and Aberffraw would serve as a memorial game to the much-missed football figure.

Funds collected on the gate would go to Sean’s family, wife Nicola and son and daughter, Noah and Hope. A fundraising page in tribute to Sean opened during the week had already reached more than £3,700 in donations.

Current Menai Bridge manager Aaron Rowlands, who served under Sean in his time as manager of the Anglesey club, said: “We raised over £3,000 on the night. We’ll keep the JustGiving page going for a few more days to anyone that wants to donate.

“More than 450 attended and there was a touching and emotional tribute before the game by Robin Williams and a message from Sean’s wife Nicola.”

The Tigers got off to a blistering start. Darren Gowans played an inviting ball down the channel to Callum Davidson who delivered firmly for Craig Roberts to finish at the near post.

It was 1-0 at half time, then nine minutes into the second period Roberts turned provider as he played in Dean Redmond to blast into the roof of the net.

Aberffraw scored immediately through Nathan Moore and soon levelled through Adam Hallybone.

It was end to end now and on 57 minutes Matty Hughes fed Sion Hogan, who sent a defence-splitting pass for Redmond to hit a ferocious shot that bounced off both posts and rolled around the net for his 18th goal of the season.

The best was saved for last. Hogan released Davidson, who cut inside and unleashed a venomous shot into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Alan Williams grabbed a late consolation for Berffro to round off a seven-goal thriller.

Dean Redmond earned man of the match honours with his non-stop running and presence in the box and dedicated his performance to Sean.

Aaron Rowlands added: “As manager I would just like to say I’m hugely proud of all my players tonight for putting the performance they did in for Sean Brett after a difficult week for us all. I know Sean would have been proud.

“Also a big thank you to my assistant-manager Karl Roberts, chairman Robyn Cooke and secretary Damian Jones. All contributed massively to last night’s tribute to Sean and a special thank you to everyone that turned out last night and all the volunteers.

“It’s the least we could have done for Sean.”

Man of the match DEAN REDMOND (Curly), whose true goal scoring potential emerged under Sean at the Bridge, said on social media: “Mr Brett brought me to Menai Tigers in the 18/19 season after pecking my head for 2 seasons prior . In the end I gave in and thought let’s have a change and I made the switch.

“The first season we won the (Gwynedd) league, cup and 2 runners-up! I won every individual award there was to get that season and I have never ever enjoyed my football as much as I did that year Waw!!!

“Sean wasn’t just my manager, he was a good friend who I loved and respected. I gave my heart and soul on the pitch for him for 90 minutes every week because I knew how much he thought of me, the respect was mutual 
“We spoke nearly every week. I’ll always be thankful for what that absolute gentleman done for me. Rest easy Brett lad big love Deano  that win was for you last night mate – and the goals.”
