Cracking goal offers some consolation for Llangefni in a heavy league defeat

Llangefni celebrate Ffion Thomas’ wonder goal – and the NFA player seems quite pleased for her too, which is fair enough as they were 5-0 up at the time. Picture: NIONYN WILLIAMS

Report from Llangefni Town

Llangefni at least had the pleasure of scoring the game’s best goal in Sunday’s home defeat to title challengers NFA.

Ffion Thomas’ long range strike was the highlight of the match for Dan Gregg’s side, who returned to the field after a four-week break.

Cefni started with two holding midfielders in a tactical switch. This seemed to work as the hosts were hard to break down for 30 minutes and frustrated the free-scoring NFA, while in spells threatening the visitors themselves.

NFA’s Sade Benjamin was a constant threat in behind and in the 34th minute she broke the deadlock. A minute later Benjamin completed her brace with a carbon copy of the first goal, making it 2-0 at half time.

Ten minutes into the second half, Stella Windsor made it 3-0 to the Rhyl team.

Llangefni then made two changes and welcomed the return of Frankie Davies from injury and best friend Sharlee Owen also tucked into midfield.

NFA’s Amy Webster then bagged herself a goal on top of a hat-trick of assists to cap off a great performance.

Llangefni then brought on the person that started this team….Elwen Evans, who gained some valuable minutes and experience against a top side.

Georgia Spibey made it 5-0 before Ffion Thomas scored the game’s best goal with a fantastic strike from distance catching the NFA goalkeeper off her line to the joy of her team-mates, who rushed to celebrate with her, showing great team spirit considering the score line.

Spibey got one last goal for NFA to make the final score 6-1.

Llangefni manager Dan Gregg said: “We worked in training on trying to keep more compact, disciplined and harder to break down.

“I thought for the first 35 minutes we showed just that and I think if you’d asked NFA at around that point they would have praised us for our efforts. This is 100% a game where the score line doesn’t tell the whole story. I think NFA could definitely see improvement in us since our first game.

“It was a day of so so many positives to build on and some top performances that are no doubt going to give me plenty of headaches selection wise.

“I just want to say a massive well done to Megan Summers today, she’s had a tough time lately in some of our games, she’s had 3 centre-back partners this season and all 3 have played outstanding next to her, which actually speaks volumes about Megan as a player, person and leader.

Myself and your team-mates appreciate you and will always have your back Megan.”
