Who are FC United of Wrexham?
Well, they are a pretty new, exciting football/futsal project which can hopefully develop into something big in Welsh football.
They run a senior men’s football team competing in the North East Wales League Championship Division, plus a number of futsal sides covering male, female and junior categories.
There was a special moment for the club just last weekend as the men celebrated their first win in the 2021/22 FA Wales Futsal Elite League North.
Heitor Leitao (3 goals), Bruno De Sousa (2), George Yarwood and veteran goalkeeper Stephen Jones shared the goals in a 7-5 win over PF Cymru.
FC United of Wrexham is the brainchild of joint-chairpersons and founders, Andrew Ruscoe and Morgan Churchill, as well as Tom Winsper.
Yes, the same Andrew Ruscoe who is current joint-manager of Prestatyn Town.
While Andrew remains very much involved with the FCUW project, his duties in trying to revive Prestatyn’s fortunes has meant Morgan and Tom – plus others – taking the main reins with the futsal club for now.
Andrew Ruscoe – Joint Chairman & Founder
Morgan Churchill – Joint Chairwoman & Founder
Tom Winsper – Vice Chairman & Founder
Tom Winsper – Club Secretary
Shane Edge – Club Development Director
Jordan Penny – Media & Marketing Director
Aston Jones – Sporting Director
Malcolm Wareham – 1st team Football Manager
Andrew Ruscoe – Futsal Manager
Kyrun Ruscoe – Head of Youth
Andrew Ruscoe – U11’s
Tom Winsper – U6’s
Morgan Churchill – Head of Female Development
Andrew Ruscoe explained: “The club was founded in 2020 due to Brickfield Rangers unfortunately pulling the plug on their futsal programme, where we now run 4 sides with a view to becoming 5 sides later on during 2022.
“The club has had notable players represent us through futsal such as Brad Miguel, who has played in World Cup qualifiers for St Vincent & the Grenadines.
“The club has already gone on to produce youth talent which has gone on to clubs such as Crewe Alexandra, Wrexham FC and Great Britain Futsal. Most recently three of our adult set up players have gone to sign for Prestatyn Town. Those players were futsal players Bruno Miguel, George Yarwood and Seb Kidd.
“The club’s youth system is mainly futsal-based as we have two visions for the football section and the futsal section.….
We have a 20 year plan to get into the second tier of Welsh football, but for us to do this we are working hard to secure grants to develop our own ground at Bronwen Green so that we can move up the leagues.
We have a seven-year plan where we want to win the FAW Futsal Elite League which will help us get into the European UEFA Futsal Champions League. We feel our U11’s, who have been coached in futsal since U5’s level, can achieve this if they keep being supported.
Overall the club is built upon positivity, inclusive practice, tackling sedentary lifestyle, supporting those with mental health, also up-skilling people so that they are ready to get back into work or universities, reducing anti-social behaviour, reducing gender inequality and creating life changing opportunities.
