Footballer Shona Roberts could be a future sensation in another sport on the evidence of her debut in the boxing ring last weekend.

The 20-year-old, who plays as a defender for Bethel in the tier 2 Genero Adran North League, stepped between the ropes for the first time at the Ultimate Fight Night show in Colwyn Bay and won by a magnificent second round stoppage.

Shona, trained by Gaz Lavin at the EMA Gym, overpowered opponent Rachel Thomas (Gaz Gee’s Martial Arts) from the start,

Using relentless two-fisted attacks, Shona was constantly on the offensive, Thomas looking to rely on her boxing skills and left jab.

Towards the end of the first round, Shona trapped her foe on the ropes with a ruthless barrage of shots and the referee gave Thomas a standing count.

The second round saw more of the same, Shona using her superior power to back up Thomas, who at one point turned away from her opponent near the ropes.

Thomas tried to compose herself, but there was no stopping Shona, who launched another fierce attack and the bout was rightly stopped.

Shona, who is sponsored by LK Fit, a personal trainer business run by fight machine and football queen Louisha Doran, was cheered on wildly by her supporters in the audience who were understandably delighted with her win.

After the contest, Shona told Grassroots North Wales: “This was my debut fight so I was nervous going Into it because it’s a new environment, completely different to football where I have a team around me.

Was really nice to have a lot of support from my family and friends on the night though, that helped me a lot.”

Shona, who formerly played for Llandudno Ladies in the Welsh Premier League, said she hopes to box again next year.

The winner with Gaz Lavin and his partner Lisa, who was Shona’s training buddy but unfortunately had to withdraw from her contest

“Next fight night is April, so I’ll train for then and am thinking of going again,” she added.

It was a fantastic night of MMA and boxing at The Barn in Eirias Park hosted by an awesome ring announcer.
