Caernarfon Town withdraw from North Wales Women’s League

Caernarfon Town have withdrawn from the North Wales Women’s Football League.

This now reduces the tier 3 league to an even 10 clubs.

Twelve teams were due to take part in the 2021-22 season, but Corwen resigned before a ball was kicked and now Caernarfon have departed after playing just one game.

Town’s only match was a 7-1 defeat at Trearddur Bay on September 5.

The Cofis were only able to field 10 players due to Covid and have struggled for personnel ever since.

While the club has a thriving girls’ section, there are reportedly not enough players to sustain a women’s team.

Caernarfon won the North Wales Women’s League in 2016-17 with a cracking team which achieved 18 victories in their 20 matches and scored a phenomenal 120 goals, Catrin Wyn Thomas netting 38 and captain Ffion Owen 33.

The team returned to the Welsh Premier League, but struggled in their first season and resigned early in 2018-19 after five straight losses.

Caernarfon rejoined the North Wales League in 2019-20, but all their better players of previous seasons had joined other clubs.

Town finished next-to-bottom of Division Two, fielding a very young side.

Last season was cancelled and the current campaign had shown no signs of better fortunes for the club’s women’s team.

The North Wales Women’s League confirmed to Grassroots North Wales today that Caernarfon had “sadly withdrawn from the league”.

Hopefully we will see them back in the future.
