Five second-half goals ensured Phoenix moved into the Cookson Cup quarter-finals after an emphatic success over a Llandyrnog side which was on level terms at the interval

In a evenly contested first half it was the visitors who took the lead, Garmon Hafal breaking down the left flank to cross a fierce ball into the danger zone which was turned in by Paul Williams.

Phoenix avoided going in at the break behind when Bill Bibby finished well from the edge of the penalty area.

It was pretty much one-way traffic in the second period with the home side dominating possession and adding a further five goals.

Llandyrnog could only respond with a consolation through a spot kick converted by Sean James.

Phoenix started the second half with Alfie Caldecott getting his first of two goals after being played in by debutant Ian Pattinson.

Before Caldecott got his second, Harry Roberts played a magnificent diagonal pass into the pass of Haydn Griffiths, who cut inside and made no mistake from 12 yards out.

Bibby rolled a pass into the path of Caldecott to complete his brace on 67 minutes.

Arguably the two best goals of the afternoon were saved till last, the penultimate fired home by Alex Brownhill following an inch-perfect cross from Adam Hunt and it was Dan Williams who completed the scoring from the halfway line.

Spotting Dylan Jones off his line, Williams let fly and the goalkeeper scrambled back to try to tip the effort over the bar but it was just out of his reach.

Winning Penmaenmawr manager Martyn Jones commented: “It was the perfect second half really, we switched off for a second in the first half and got punished.

“We spoke at half time about continuing to play in the same way but to be more clinical in the final third and the lads certainly did that.

“It’s a cup we are taking very seriously and I look forward to the trip to my old club Junction in the quarter final.”
