Five wins out of five in all competitions for CPD Bangor 1876 – and they are not holding back in the goals department.

Wednesday night brought a comfortable 6-0 thrashing of Anglesey’s Aberffraw.

Just before the match began the players and crowd offered a minute of applause to celebrate the life of Dan Shooman.

Dan, one of our founding members, sadly passed away last week. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.

The match began with a decent opening 10 minutes for 1876. In the seventh minute a nice through ball allowed Gethin Thomas to finish confidently

Soon after Tom Clarke scored the second blue goal when his back post shot crossed the line.

Whilst 1876 enjoyed a healthy two-goal lead that didn’t mean an easy ride for the hosts. By the time the first half drinks break arrived Aberffraw had enjoyed a lot of possession and some of their midfielders had started to show an assured touch on the ball.

In the ten minutes before half time 1876 created several opportunities. One attack was repelled by another brilliant save from Aberffraw keeper Caron Hughes, then a goalmouth scramble saw the ball cleared off the goal-line.

Half-time: 2-0

1876 began the second half with an enthused air and forced Hughes to make yet another excellent save. They scored their third goal of the match when Chris Jones turned smartly enough to open space for a smart finish in the 51st minute.

Aberffraw never relented in their quest to score. They won some corners, took a long shot that hit the crossbar and a volleyed shot that was cleared off the line.

The blues’ fourth goal arrived in the 68th minute when Les Davies found enough time and space to chest trap a cross from the left wing and apply a calm finish.

Sam Roberts capped his first full match of the season with a goal to make it 5-0. He scored with a powerful shot into the roof of the net from the edge of the 18-yard area.

On 80 minutes Davies brought an end to the goal-scoring when he smashed home a penalty

It had been an evening of colour, an azure sky of deepest summer, a verdant pitch of springy grass, one team in blue and the other in yellow. In short it had been the perfect evening to watch football.
