Chris Davies ended his managerial reign at Trearddur Bay in real style back in 2012

It was nine years ago this month that one of the greatest reigns ever by an Anglesey football manager came to an end.

Chris Davies ended an amazing spell as Trearddur Bay United boss in tremendous style when they lifted the Cwpan Gwynedd, beating Llanystumdwy 2-0 in the final thanks to an Asa Thomas double.

It was a 10th trophy in four seasons under Davies for the Lon Isallt outfit since they switched to Saturday league football in the 2008/09 campaign.

It was the perfect sign-off for Davies, who stepped down to concentrate on coaching his young son’s under-seven team.

“I felt we deserved the win,” commented the departing Bay boss.

“Fair play to Llanystumdwy, they played their part and limited us to few chances in the first half, but in the second half we had a lot of possession and the great pitch at Porthmadog suited our style of football.”

Davies led the Bay for two successful seasons in the North Gwynedd and Anglesey Sunday League before the club decided to opt for Saturday football in 2008/09.

In their first season they lifted the NWCFA Junior Cup, as well as the Dargie and Thomas and Williams cups on offer within the Anglesey League.

The following campaign they retained the Dargie and scooped the Elias Cup, but the 2010/11 term proved extra special as Trearddur were crowned Anglesey League champions and landed the Dargie, Megan and Thomas and Williams cups to complete a quadruple.

They were also beaten finalists in the Junior Cup and Elias Cups and boasted a 112-goal hero in Asa Thomas.

In 2011/12 Bay were promoted to the Gwynedd League and just missed out on the title, finishing runners-up to Penrhyndeudraeth, but added the Cwpan Gwynedd to their collection.

The Cwpan Gwynedd final at Y Traeth saw few first half chances with both defences coping well against the threat of some of the league’s best strikers.

Bay did look the stronger, however, as they passed the ball around well on a pitch that suited them down to the ground.

Dean Garmey was always looking to get the ball moving quickly and keep possession. Ryan Jones was also a constant threat on the right wing with his pace and ability to take the full-back on.

The only decent chance that did fall came after a great run down the right by Jones and a driven cross which found Ian Williams at the back post only for his effort to sail over the bar.

The second half saw Bay pushing for the first goal and when Garmey played the ball through to Thomas in the 62nd minute he slotted past the charging keeper to put the islanders into the lead.

Only a great save from Gareth Owen denied Llan an equaliser before in the 80th minute Thomas cut in from the left and after spotting the keeper off his line lobbed him expertly to celebrate his 41st goal of the season and 22nd for Bay.

Davies paid tribute to 21-year-old match-winner Thomas, saying: “His finishing is of a different class. He’s definitely one of the best players I’ve ever managed.”
