Flashback – 10 years ago: Bangor City hit Haver for six

After going unbeaten in their first 17 league games of the season, Bangor had started off 2011 on the wrong foot with back-to-back defeats at Prestatyn Town and Llanelli.

Neville Powell’s men needed a tonic – and it came in their first appearance of the new year at Farrar Road against hapless Haverfordwest.

With Jamie Reed having left to join Conference Premier side York City and key defender James Brewerton serving a one-match ban, Bangor kept faith with Clive Williams at right back and Peter Hoy at centre half, which allowed Dave Morley to screen the defence from central midfield.

Not that it needed much screening from a one-paced County side who lost goalkeeper Lee Idzi to a broken finger on 10 minutes and seemed to play with 10 men thereafter.

Idzi appeared to punch Craig Garside’s head as he attempted to clear a Les Davies cross and could take no further part in the game. Gareth Elliott took over in goal.

Within 60 seconds Bangor went ahead as the outstanding Chris Jones slotted home past the stand-in keeper.

The hosts won a corner five minutes later but Morley headed wide before a second goal duly arrived on 19.

Jones robbed Kirk Huggins on halfway, chased down the right and crossed for Davies to find the net.

Two minutes later, it was 3-0 and all over as Morley headed home from close range.

Alan Bull, by now desperate to get his name on the scoresheet, outpaced Lee Jarman but saw his shot from the left roll against the post.

In the 38th minute arrived a fourth goal and some reward for the hard-working Bull as he netted from the right. Four minutes later, it got worse for the visitors as Davies latched onto a low cross to place the ball beyond the exposed Elliott.

The second half promised to be more of the same. The fact that it didn’t owed something to missed chances but credit also to the visitors who refused to lie down or resort to foul play.

Hoy and Clive Williams went near for the Citizens before Haver’s Jack Christopher missed an open goal from six yards.

On 63 minutes it was 6-0 as Davies flicked on Jones’ corner for the marauding Hoy to head in.

Bangor won a couple more corners at the Farrar End, who were now in good voice, and Clive Williams was denied by a fine save from the gallant Phillips.

After 73 minutes a triple substitution for Bangor as Sion Edwards, Mark Smyth and Eddie Jebb came on for Jones, Ward and Bull.

In the closing minutes Edwards went close twice. First he pulled the ball down on the edge of the box, turned and saw his booming effort blocked, then shooting from the left he hit a team-mate in an offside position. On another day…
