Catrin is one of the most skilful players on the North Wales football scene

In the eight years I’ve been reporting on women’s football in North Wales I’ve seen some very gifted players in action.

Catrin Wyn Thomas is definitely one of the most talented.

She can make the game look so easy with her lovely ball control and classy finishing.

One of the best goals I’ve ever seen her score was for Caernarfon Town against Rhyl in the Welsh Cup.

Catrin used her skills to turn defenders inside and out in a tight space before applying a clinical finish.

The sort of goal you don’t see enough in this standard of football.

Catrin began playing football aged five; she played the game every day in the street with the boys.

Her first football team was Cae Glyn under-sevens; she was the only girl and it was a successful team.

She played for the girls school team before joining Caernarfon Town.

Mum-of-two Catrin’s versatility makes her capable in all positions.

In the 2016-17 season, Caernarfon Town used her as a striker and she scored 38 goals.

At Llandudno, where she reached and scored in the 2015-16 Welsh Cup final, she was employed at left-back.

Strong in the tackle, she’s also very good at heading the ball.

While she has enjoyed many good seasons on the football field, 2016-17 was probably Catrin’s best when she was part of hometown team Caernarfon’s double-winning success.

Her 38 goals came in less than half that amount of games as the Canaries stormed to the North Wales Women’s League title and Betty Pickering Cup double.

Town won the championship by a 13-point margin, scoring 120 goals and conceding just 13.

Catrin scored seven goals in one game against Prestatyn – and on her birthday.

At the end of the season Catrin was presented with the 2016-17 Grassroots North Wales Women’s Player of the Year award.

She returned to the Welsh Premier League with Caernarfon for the 2017-18 season, but the team struggled and finished next to bottom.

In March 2019, Catrin signed for Mountain Rangers and scored on her debut in a 3-2 cup win over Pwllheli.

After rejoining Llandudno in summer 2019, she returned to Rangers for a second spell.

Catrin has not decided who she will play for this season – if or when it starts – but whoever signs her will benefit from the presence of a truly fine player.

Football runs in the family, as Catrin’s brother is Darren Wyn Thomas, Caernarfon Town’s “Mini Messi” whose wonder run and finish versus The New Saints in the 2014-15 Welsh Cup was adjudged Goal of the Decade by Sgorio viewers.
