Great North Wales football memories – Conwy Legion United’s debut season treble

Some football teams are not around for too long but in their short existence they make quite an impression.

Take Conwy Legion United, who competed in the Vale of Clwyd and Conwy League for two seasons in 2013-14 and 2014-15.

Following a successful spell in Sunday football, Legion’s debut 2013-14 campaign in the Saturday game was something special as they scooped the Division One title, REM Jones Cup and President’s Cup treble.

The triple whammy was achieved within eight days.

Legion beat Prestatyn Sports 2-0 in the REM Jones Division One Cup final at Colwyn Bay thanks to goals from Chris Quinn and Olly Walters.

Another victory by the same score over title rivals Sports in a winner-takes-all battle secured the Division One championship, the prolific Quinn netting both.

And despite trailing in the President’s Cup Final to FC Tudno, they battled back to triumph 5-1, Quinn with two, Paul Wilson, Ross Howcroft-Jones and Walters adding singles.

The team, managed by Martyn Jones, with assistance from Olly Walters and a certain Mr Dave Fare among others, had a 22-man main squad to thank for their amazing success:

It would be unfair to pick out any star players, but the top-scorer that season Chris Quinn, who bagged 43 goals in 22 appearances, warrants special mention.

Conwy Legion United were runners-up in the Premier Division in 2014-15 and disbanded at the end of the season.

Another great Legion feat

To go 12 months unbeaten in any league is quite a thing.
However, to win every league game you play over a year is even better.
When Conwy Legion United triumphed 2-1 at Llannefydd on November 8, 2014, it meant they had won all 15 league matches since their last defeat – a 5-0 home loss to FC Tudno exactly 12 months earlier.
In that run, Legion scored 83 goals and conceded just 18.
