Cymru Premier goal greats in deadly form – Draper sets new club record

There has been some interesting activity in the Cymru Premier League all-time top 10 goalscorers list over the past week.

Rhys Griffiths, second in the standings, turned back the clock when he was on target twice for Penybont in a 4-0 win at Haverfordwest County to move up to 271 in total.

Griffiths, 40, is still 48 goals behind leader Marc Lloyd-Williams, but it was nice to see the former Plymouth Argyle front man boosting his tally in his role as player-manager of Penybont.

One chart where Rhys sits at No 1 is the most league goals for a single Welsh Premier club – his remarkable haul of 180 goals in 181 appearances for Llanelli has him top of the pile.

Rhys also holds the record for the most Golden Boot awards – seven, all in a row.

Elsewhere this week, Michael Wilde of Connah’s Quay Nomads edged one goal closer to becoming the fourth CPL player to reach 200 by finding the net in his team’s 3-1 win over Caernarfon. Wilde is on 191.

Chris Venables’ goal for Bala last weekend put him on 180 in all, while Greg Draper became The New Saints’ all-time highest marksman in the WPL when his nap hand in a 10-0 drubbing of Flint Town United vaulted him up to 156 for the club. He overtook previous No 1 Saints goal-getter Wilde on 154.

Greg said after the game he has 200 in his sights and few would bet against him. All of his 156 to date have come in a TNS shirt.
