Midfield maestro Dylan Owen hangs up his boots

Dylan Owen will be remembered at Llanrug as an all-time great

One of North Wales’ most talented players of the past 20 years has hung up his boots.

Midfield marauder Dylan Owen spent the last eight seasons of his career at Llanrug United.

Before that he was a scholar at Wrexham and went on to represent Caernarfon Town, Colwyn Bay (loan), Rhyl, Llangefni Town, Caernarfon Wanderers and Nantlle Vale.

Affectionately known as Midge, Owen joined Llanrug in August 2012.

He made 229 appearances for the Arfon club, netting 68 goals and gaining 36 man of the match awards.

Twice club Player of The Season in 2013/14 and 2015/16, he was top scorer with 14 goals in the latter campaign.

Dylan’s greatest achievement at Llanrug was undoubtedly lifting the coveted FAW Trophy in 2013/14.

He also won the Cookson Cup in 2014/15 and the Mawddach Cup in 2016/17.

Dylan said: “It is with deep regret that I have decided to retire. I was delighted and very proud to have the opportunity to be a player and more recently part of the management team of Llanrug United.

“I wish the club all the best for the new season and hope they can carry on the successful period the club has seen in recent years.”

United vice-chairman Kevin W Owen commented: “I am, as is everybody else at Llanrug United, very sad that Midge has decided to retire.

“He has been a very valuable asset for the club for a long period and a very highly respected, intelligent player.”

When interviewed by Grassroots North Wales about his career last year, Dylan said his three top moments in football were winning the FAW Trophy with Llanrug, scoring from a wonder free kick on his home debut for Caernarfon against top of the league Aberystwyth to beat them 3-2, and signing a scholarship for Wrexham.

He will always be remembered for his skills from dead-ball situations, being a prolific penalty converted and also striker of many a stunning free kick.
