Rhyl FC’s new name is….CPD Y Rhyl 1879

The former Rhyl FC have a brand new name – CPD Y Rhyl 1879.

Last month Rhyl Football Club Belle Vue Limited was liquidated.

It brought to an end a 141-year football history in the town which delivered four Welsh Cups, three Cheshire County League titles, two Welsh Premier championships and European football.

Rhyl Fans Association were determined to ensure football in the resort would never die.

Having already raised thousands of pounds for the cause, they also ran an online poll for supporters offering three options for a name for a phoenix club. The unanimous choice was Rhyl FC.

This was believed to be perfectly acceptable as the former club was known as Rhyl Football Club Belle Vue Limited.

However, on FAW advice, the club was told a new name would be required.

RFA members were balloted again and 82% voted.

Results revealed tonight were:
CPD Y Rhyl 1879 – 54.6%
AFC Rhyl – 45.4%

So the club’s new name – subject to FAW approval – is CPD Y Rhyl 1879. The 1879 relates to the year a football club was first formed in Rhyl.

It is hoped the new club can now establish what ground they will play at in the 2020-21 season.

The current Belle Vue stadium, where the former Rhyl FC had played since 1900, is owned by local businessman David Butters, who has remained reluctant to sell the ground despite constantly being offered above the market value by ex-club officials.

Talks are in the air over a potential new ground share arrangement for next season. The new club does have a preferred option.
