Newly-formed CPD Y Rhyl 1879 have applied to join tier 4 of the Welsh football pyramid system.

The phoenix club recently formed following the demise of Rhyl FC, which folded after 141 years of existence in the town.

CPD Y Rhyl 1879 revealed on social media it had officially submitted its application to the North Wales Coast FA to play tier 4 football in 2020-21.

The current tier 4 league most applicable geographically to Rhyl is Welsh Alliance Division Two. But that league disappears next season under the pyramid changes being introduced into Welsh football.

Next season tier 4 will comprise the North Wales Coast West/East Premier Divisions (effectively the current Vale of Clwyd and Conwy League Premier Division level).

The new club badge

Since CPD Y Rhyl 1879 was formed, talk of where the club would enter the pyramid has been rife on social media.

Some commenters have said it would be unfair for the new team to be installed at a high level straight off, despite its excellent facilities.

Others have opined it would be a waste of a great stadium like Belle Vue to be hosting lower league football (or ‘recreational’ as the FAW unflatteringly class it) if 1879 were placed in the depths of the pyramid.

However, the club has batted off any potential controversy by applying for tier 4.

CPD Y Rhyl 1879 also reports it has received a healthy number of applications for the vacant manager’s job.

There was much joy earlier this month when the club announced it had secured a deal to play at Belle Vue for the 2020-21 season with ground owner David Butters.

Previously reluctant to negotiate the sale of the stadium, Mr Butters has also given 1879 first option on buying the ground where football has been played since 1900.
