Here’s part four of a series where we choose what we consider are the best XI’s in North Wales women’s football according to their surnames.
We will restrict selections to the North Wales Women’s League, Welsh Premier League, North Wales Recreational League and great past North Wales teams such as Bangor City, Caernarfon Town and Llandudno..
We’ll avoid girls playing in English teams as there are so many of them, it is not that easy to find details on where all of them play, and there is always the risk of leaving out a top player.
There is less chance of that happening with the leagues I am picking from – I’ve never claimed to know everyone or everything!
So far we have selected a Thomas XI, Williams XI and Jones XI. Today it is the turn of the Hughes XI to impress you.
Tall and assertive goalkeeper with very good shot-stopping ability who was at Llandudno in their best-ever season of 2015-16, when they reached the Welsh Cup Final for the only time in their history.
Although Tudno lost 5-2 in the showpiece to Cardiff City FC Women, Hughes in fact had a very good game, some great saves ensuring the North Walians avoided a heavier defeat.
Hughes also previously played for Llandudno Junction before they became Llandudno.
She stopped playing competitively a couple of years ago, but returned this season to represent Llandudno in the Welsh Cup against Abergavenny.
Hard-working, energetic, dynamic right-back who has shone in the Welsh Premier for Llandudno and Caernarfon Town.
Returned to her first club Pwllheli this season following the resignation of Llandudno from the WPL.
Cara wins admirers wherever she plays for her non-stop commitment and effort at the back, and when attacking down the wings.
Defender who first made her mark in the Caernarfon Under-16 quadruple-winning side of 2013-14 which lifted the Welsh Cup.
Moved from Caernarfon Town to Bethel where she was part of a developing side, then this season signed for Denbigh Town, where the opportunity to play games has been severely restricted for the whole team – even before the coronavirus.
Just 18-years-old but a tremendous prospect in central defence for new side NFA this term.
Llinos has already earned rave reviews for her performances in this shortened season, her ability in the air and on the ball very impressive.
Rock-solid centre-back for Pwllheli over the past two seasons, but also has the ability to produce plenty of goals.
One of the most consistent players for the Llyn side, the pacy Lowri can operate in any position.
Has played for Wales Under-17s and captained Pwllheli so the pedigree is there to be a major leader in this Hughes team.
Injuries have held her back this season, but on her best form Northop Hall’s Rebecca is one of the finest midfielders in North Wales League Division One.
Can always be relied upon to work hard for the team and gets her share of goals.
Right-winger with great speed and the ability to deliver a fine cross into the box.
Another of Pwllheli’s most reliable players this season.
Midfielder Magi is also Pwllheli’s vice-captain. She knows how to pass a ball at the right time and reads the game well in her central position.
Another top young prospect at the age of just 21.
A surprise choice? Not to anyone who knows her or has seen her play.
Has played mainly in the North Wales Recreational League for Penrhyn Bay Panthers this season, but also did well when drafted into Llandudno’s squad for their Welsh Cup tie with Abergavenny.
Ella will run all day, like a 50p rolling down a steep hill. A really hard-worker on the field, a captain’s dream.
Has only played a handful of games in this curtailed season to date for Denbigh, but has managed to amass 18 goals.
Rosie has pace in abundance and brilliant finishing ability. She has scored two double hat-tricks and a four in her goals haul this term.
One of the stars of Llandudno’s 2015-16 Welsh Cup final season and was regularly the team’s top-scorer.
Razor-sharp forward who represented Wales at various age levels and also had a spell with WSL club Reading.
Returned to the scene last season with North Wales League Division Two title-winners Bethesda.
Great skills and pace up front, always on alert to take a punt at goal. One of North Wales’ most talented.
