Welsh Alliance: Denbigh back at the peak, Phoenix fly to Division Two pinnacle

Denbigh Town returned to the Welsh Alliance Division One summit with a 2-1 victory at Glan Conwy secured thanks to an early double from captain Mark Roberts.

This was a game of two halves with Town dominating the first, which should have ended with more than a two-goal lead, then a rejuvenated Glan pulling one back through Tom Rooney after the break and having chances to equalise, Denbigh keeper Antoni Sarnowski producing some tremendous saves.

Following a Glan corner in the fifth minute the ball cleared the goalmouth and Will Ashley was able to find Roberts on the halfway line.

Roberts turned his defender and headed for goal with strength and pace, reaching inside the penalty area and then sliding the ball under the advancing keeper for 1-0.

In the 17th minute Town left-back Dan Lloyd floated a ball up to Roberts just inside the Glan half. Roberts headed the ball over his defender, sprinted goalward and was able to chip the keeper from 20 yards to give Denbigh a two-goal lead.

Minutes later Roberts clattered the crossbar from 20 yards. Chris Bennett jumped on the rebound and fired home only to be flagged offside.

Half time came with Denbigh well on top and looking forward to the second period, Glan Conwy had other ideas and made two substitutions which helped change the game in their favour.

After 67 minutes Jamie Jones floated a corner into the penalty box and Rooney headed home from six yards.

Roberts was denied what he thought was his hat-trick for offside before Sarnowski pulled off two brilliant saves.

The hosts continued to threaten as Denbigh dropped deeper and deeper, but thanks to some stern defending Town held out for the three points.

Llandyrnog United celebrated their first win of the season with a 5-2 home beating of Prestatyn Sports, who now replace Dyrny at the bottom of Division One.

Josh Jones and Ross Gilbert bagged a brace apiece for the hosts, Russell Moorcroft adding a single, Kris Owen and Robbie Dunn replying.

There was a thriller at Mynydd Llandegai, where the home side recovered from 4-1 down to draw four-apiece with Nantlle Vale.

Aaron Hughes, Ashley Owen, Sion Williams and Aaron Thomas ensured Vale were 4-1 up at half time, Tom Collins having struck first for Mynydd.

In the second half Llandegai launched a stunning comeback, Gwyn Pritchard Jones (2) and Osian Jones salvaging them a point.

Penmaenmawr Phoenix and Gwalchmai are joint top of Division Two following a thrilling weekend of action.

On Friday night, Phoenix came back from two-down to win 3-2 at Llandudno Amateurs.

Joe Jones and debutant Joe Collier put Amateurs two ahead at the interval, but the hosts had a man sent off in the second half and Phoenix capitalised with goals in the final 20 minutes from Alfie Caldecott, Sean Williams and Russell Jones.

Marc Evans (2) and Gethin Davies guided Gwalchmai to a 3-1 success over Mochdre Sports, Chris Lloyd for the visitors.

Kinmel Bay and Y Felinheli shared the spoils 3-3. Matthew Griffiths, Jordan Worthington and Ashley Wood were the home hitmen, Ryan Cain, Gruff John and Owain Roberts responding.

Marquis Holland, Kian Abbott, Gwyndaf Hughes, Rees Roberts and Sion Jones notched a goal apiece for Pentraeth as they defeated Llandudno Junction 5-3, Liam Jones, Curtis Cooper and David Algieri for the Railwaymen.

In the Reserves Division, Penmaenmawr Phoenix outscored Kinmel Bay 4-1, Harri Lloyd, Hayden Tidswell (2) and Mathew Roberts netting for the winners, Aaron Dodwell replying.
