Bangor 1876: Davies sets personal record as undefeateds cause big cup upset

WELSH CUP SECOND QUALIFYING ROUND

Les Davies netted four goals in a game for the first time in his senior career as Bangor 1876 produced perhaps their finest display yet in dumping opponents from two levels higher out of the Welsh Cup.

The Gwynedd League hosts thrashed Welsh Alliance Division One side Penrhyndeudraeth 6-2 at Treborth to reach the first round proper of Wales’ premier knockout tournament at the first attempt.

The result also made it nine straight wins in all competitions for the newly-formed side.

With leading goalscorer Jamie Petrie and midfielder Dylan Williams unavailable, manager Mel Jones made a handful of changes to the line-up that triumphed at Talysarn Celts the previous weekend.

Defender Matthew Lock made his first full start at right back with Shaun Lock also drafted in at left back. Dion Jones and Jos Lloyd moved forward into midfield roles with Dafydd Thomas favoured in place of Ben Owen alongside Cameron Barry.

The hosts enjoyed a perfect start as Davies burst into the Penrhyn penalty area and fired past visiting goalkeeper Robert Watson from 10 yards.

In the 16th minute, Davies doubled Bangor 1876’s lead with a powerful drive from the edge of the ‘D’ despite the close attention of the Penrhyn centre backs.

Things got even better for the home side on 19 minutes as Dylan Summers-Jones made it three from close range.

Home keeper Leon Jones produced a superb reflex save on 42 minutes as the visitors pushed for a way back into the match.

Just two minutes before the interval, Bangor put themselves into a commanding position with a fourth goal. Summers-Jones was upended by right back Cedri Jones and Davies stepped up to claim a first-half hat-trick from the penalty spot.

The home side began the second half on fire, Summers-Jones’ rasping shot striking the woodwork. A fifth goal duly arrived on 63 minutes. A long throw by Lock found Davies, whose sweet right-foot strike brought him a fourth goal of the tie and seventh of the campaign.

Steven Jones pulled one back for the visitors before a second effort from Penrhyn was adjudged to have crossed the line despite a last ditch clearance.

Bangor 1876 recovered their composure sufficiently to add another goal on 75 minutes. Summers-Jones found himself in space on the right hand side and bearing down on goal slotted his shot through Watson’s legs for his 11th goal of the season.

Penrhyn had a chance of a late consolation, but Leon Jones produced a fine penalty save from Jack Jones on 88 minutes.
