North Wales Road Runners held their annual summer relays last Tuesday in conditions more akin to early autumn, with a cool headwind plus some slight rain towards the end.

Staged on the promenade in Llandudno and starting from near the pier, the relay was split into three sections totalling 5-miles, with each member of the six teams running a varied leg of either 1, 1.5 or 2.5 miles.

This included 17 club members running out from the stumps to the bandstand and back on the 1st leg, back and forth to the theatre on leg 2, and finally down and around the paddling pool and back for leg 3.

The winning team consisted of Helen Hannam, Stuart Culverhouse and Jonathan Kettle who completed the flat, fast course in just 27 mins 26 secs.

In second place came Kevin Higgins, Gethin Jones and Nic Brook, who finished in 28.30, and third were Don Hale, Karl Morris and Tony Price Jones, just 16 seconds adrift in 28.46.

The other three teams, who each did exceptionally well, included: 4th place: Len Jackson, Richard Scamans and Gemma Brown (29.32), followed just one second later in 5th spot by Kay Hatton, Steve Poupart and Troy Kettle in 29.33.

Helen’s time and effort doubled up to complete the sixth team with partially sighted runner Daniel Owens – running with guide Anthony Parvin – and colleague Steve Roberts, all contributing to a great final chase in 30.46.

Prizes were later awarded at a sausage and chips supper at the ROAB in town.
