Sad news as new women’s football team instantly folds due to lack of interest

Newly-named Prestatyn Town Ladies have folded a month before the start of the 2019-20 North Wales women’s football season.

Last season’s Prestatyn FC had merged with Town, and new coaching and backroom staff had come on board.

It was reported last week that player recruitment was going well, but more faces were needed to make competing a viable prospect.

However, the team confirmed today that plans to enter the team in the North Wales Women’s League this season had been scrapped.

Manager David Edwards said “Unfortunately, due to lack of players and commitment we’ve had to fold the team.”

The club has withdrawn from the FAW Women’s Welsh Cup and their scheduled opening round opponents, Corwen, now go forward automatically to meet Llandudno in the next stage.

This now reduces the amount of potential teams competing in the North Wales League this season to 18.

It was revealed on Monday that the NWWFL is to remain as it is for the 2019-20 season after plans for a new North Wales Coast FA League were rejected by the FAW.

Clubs who wish to join the NWWFL must do so by August 17. Fixtures are due to start on September 8.

Due to problems which emerged last season, two appeals are still ongoing with the FAW. The 2018-19 Division One champions are yet to be crowned and a promotion issue affecting Division Two is also in the balance.

An FAW hearing into both matters is expected to be held and concluded on August 15.

A meeting of the North Wales Women’s League will then take place at the Springfield Hotel in Holywell on August 21 at 7pm, where the make-up of the two divisions for 2019-20 will be confirmed.

The 18 teams which could make up the new league are……
