Bangor 1876 record their first-ever win

New club Bangor 1876 celebrated their first win at the third attempt with a hard-earned success over Welsh National League Premier Division side Holywell at Treborth on Saturday afternoon.

Having lost their opener against a very strong FC United of Manchester 12-1 seven days earlier and then gone down 2-1 at Chester in midweek, Les Davies on the mark, 1876 got it right in their first-ever home match in front of a crowd in excess of 300.

The deadlock was broken on 18 minutes when Dylan Summers-Jones’ volley from a Jamie Petrie corner was blocked, but new signing, former Chester FC Youth captain Dion Jones, was on hand to slot home.

Benn Lundstram, scorer of the first goal in 1876’s history in Manchester the previous weekend, went close twice before the hosts lost former Llandudno and Caernarfon Town manager Iwan Williams with a muscle strain.

Two minutes after the restart, the home side went two-up when Shaun Lock sent a long throw into the box, Les Davies flicked a trademark header to the far post and Petrie produced a clinical finish.

Bangor 1876 added a third after 55 minutes when a missed attempted clearance from goalkeeper Mike Platt left Petrie with the simplest of finishes.

Holywell upped their game and grabbed a consolation goal on 78 minutes as defender Jacob Wise rose highest to head home from a corner.
