Corwen Ladies football team have received a massive boost ahead of the 2019-20 season with the signing of Alaw Davies-Smith as player-coach.
Alaw, the Grassroots North Wales Women’s Player of the Season for 2018-19, joins Corwen from Rhyl, where she has established herself as one of the best right-backs in the Welsh Premier Women’s League in recent years.
She said: “This is an exciting opportunity to work with and play alongside a great bunch of players whose best years are ahead of them.
“Corwen had a really good debut season and are looking to build on that. I hope the experience I have gained as a player and coach will help them reach the next stage.
“I’ve enjoyed my time at Rhyl and wish them all the best for the future, but I felt the time was right for a new challenge and I can’t wait to get started.”
Corwen FC team manager Huw Jones said: “Alaw is an excellent acquisition to the squad. Her experience and knowledge of senior football will only make a good Corwen team even better.
“Hopefully, the club will be able to announce a few more signings over the next few weeks to bolster the squad.”
Alaw was introduced to everyone when Corwen Ladies held their presentation evening last night at the newly revamped Blue Lion Hotel in Cynwyd, Corwen.
Huw Jones thanked everyone who played last season, the team reaching two cup semi-finals and only losing two league matches. As it was their first season in senior football this was an outstanding achievement for such a young side.
Before presenting various trophies to the players, Huw also thanked all his fellow coaches, parents and helpers which make Corwen Ladies and Girls a unique team bond of everyone pulling together for success in women’s football in the locality with the town fielding a ladies, as well as Under-16, U-14 and U-12’s teams next season which promises a great future now and beyond.
