Connah’s Quay Nomads want to break their attendance record for a great cause on Friday night.
The club hopes to smash the 1,000 barrier for the first time when they take on neighbours and landlords Flint Town United at the Essity Stadium.
The Novira Cymru Premier League derby will be part of a dual event which includes a fireworks display at Flint Castle, which is very near to the football ground.. Half the money raised will go to Flint RNLI.
The Friday Night Lights idea was devised by Alex Catton of Vedere Travel, a former Nomads player.
“With just a few days still to go, Connah’s Quay Nomads have already sold four times as many tickets online as they’d ever sold for a single game,” said Alex.
“Now we’re hoping the local community can help us break the attendance record of 1000 people, something we have never achieved!”
Despite their successes of recent seasons, including two Cymru Premier League titles, a pair of Welsh Cup triumphs and numerous fine performances in Europe, Nomads still regularly pull in among the smallest crowds in the national league.
Alex hopes to instigate an upward trend, starting with Friday night’s sparklling event.
He added: “I grew up playing for the Nomads, and the idea behind Friday Night Lights was simple: give local families who’ve never been to a game a reason to come along, enjoy themselves and want to come back.
“Flint RNLI have brought their fireworks forward and the FAW have moved kick-off back by 15 minutes so families can enjoy both. Gates open at Flint Castle at 6pm, the fireworks start at around 7pm, and then it’s a short walk to the Essity Stadium for Nomads v Flint Town United at 8pm. We’ve got local food traders at the ground and, at half-time, players from the two academies will take penalties against Kid De Gea.
“A combined ticket is £10 for adults and £1 for children, with £5 from every adult ticket and the full £1 from every child ticket going to Flint RNLI. For the football alone, it’s £5 for adults and kids go free.”
