Thomas will be in temporary charge at Mold for weekend clash with former club Rhyl 1879

Gareth Thomas will be in charge of Mold Alex for Saturday’s tussle with his former club Rhyl 1879

Gareth Thomas will come up against a former club when he takes temporary charge of Mold Alexandra for this weekend’s Novira Cymru North clash with CPD Y Rhyl 1879.
Thomas will lead the Alex after manager Barry Owen and assistant Liam Groves departed Alyn Park yesterday to take over at Rhyl 1879.
Owen and Groves will not be involved with Rhyl for Saturday’s game as they do not officially take up their roles until Sunday.
Steve Giblin and Zion Hopkins, who took on 1879 caretaker-manager duties for last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Newtown, will remain in position for the trip to Mold.
In the opposition dugout will be another temporary boss in Thomas, a highly experienced manager with past Tier 2 stints in charge of Halkyn United, Buckley Town, Mynydd Isa and Denbigh Town.
Known popularly as ‘Perry; the 54-year-old was Rhyl 1879’s first manager when the phoenix club started playing competitively in 2021-22.
They won the Tier 4 North Wales Coast East Premier Division title and Cookson Cup double in their debut season and Thomas remained at Belle Vue until November 2024 before becoming manager of Prestatyn Town.
He was appointed first team coach at Mold alongside Owen and Groves last season.
Mold Alex said in a statement today: “Following the departure of the First Team Manager and Assistant Manager, Mold Alexandra can confirm that preparations for Saturday’s home fixture against CPD Rhyl 1879 will be overseen by First Team Coach Gareth Thomas with support from the current backroom staff and senior players.
“Everyone at the club remains fully focused on Saturday’s match, and the priority is to ensure the players are prepared and ready to perform in front of our home supporters.
“The club will begin a recruitment process for the vacant positions shortly after Saturday’s fixture.”
