Mike Chapman (white) celebrates a Llysfaen goal

Heartbreak for knockout kings Llysfaen as they lost to a 98th minute winner at Y Morfa.

The Tier 5 North Wales Coast East Division One underdogs led 3-1 and 4-3 in a cracking tie which was a credit to North Wales football, but fourth-tier Conwy kept pushing till the end and delivered the killer blow just as a penalty shoot out looked likely.

Already into the Welsh Cup second round proper and still alive in the NWCFA Junior Cup, Faen said goodbye to the Trophy but what an adventure it has been.

Gareth Dentith and Gaz Sorfleet;s side got off to an absolute flyer, taking a 3-0 lead inside the first 21 minutes.

Top-scorer Mike Chapman struck on 10 and 18 minutes to move up to 23 goals for the season and then provided the assist for Sean Sheridan to make it three.

Shellshocked Conwy replied on 26 through Cieran Williams but at the break trailed 3-1 and left themselves with plenty to do.

Boro started the second half well, Dion Jones and Williams finding the net two minutes apart to make it 3-3 with 54 on the clock.

Still Llysfaen refused to lie down and regained the lead on 74, Sheridan on the mark again, 17-year-old Euan Preece with his second assist.

Williams completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot to level the match on 78, but four minutes later Conwy were down to 10 men after Sam Jones was shown a red.

Both sides pushed for the decider, which finally arrived eight minutes past the 90 when Dion Jones fired home.

Sheridan was red-carded soon after to end the afternoon on a sad note for the visitors, but what an effort they put in.

Llysfaen joint-manager Gaz Sorfleet’: “It’s not often you leave a game in good spirits after a loss, but theres zero negatives after today, apart from conceding so late.  I thought man for man we were absolutely superb and the lads should be so proud of themselves as we are, especially with the amount of lads we had missing as well.
“Some questionable decisions that had a big impact on the game, but we won’t use it as an excuse.  We know how well we’ve performed today, our heads are held high and we attack this month head on.”

Gareth Dentith added: “We can walk away from that performance with our heads held high. every single player showed character today. To walk off that pitch and be told by the opposition that we were robbed is a statement in itself. We can’t dwell on today we look forward to next week where we are involved in another cup.”
