New senior side Hotspur welcomed local rivals Trearddur Bay for their first home league game of the season – and a first-ever derby meeting between the sides.
Both teams started brightly, with the game played at a fast tempo from the opening whistle. Holyhead pressed high and looked to take control early, although at times they were guilty of overplaying the ball.
The breakthrough came in the 17th minute when Efa Hughes won possession in central midfield and found Ebony Edwards further forward. Ebony produced a brilliant through ball into the path of Grace Stockall, who powered through before smashing an unstoppable finish into the back of the net.
Trearddur Bay responded and looked to apply pressure, but Holyhead began to settle into the game and play some excellent football. Efa Hughes, Ebony Edwards and Amelia Roberts took control of the midfield and helped dictate the tempo.
Then in the 27th minute, Stockall found herself through once again and made no mistake, grabbing her second goal of the afternoon and giving Holyhead a 2–0 lead.
Down the left, Gwen Jones worked tirelessly up and down the pitch, while Sophie Richards caused problems out wide throughout the first half.
At the other end, Keira Thomas, Nia Hayes and Sharlee Owen stood strong defensively, limiting Trearddur Bay’s opportunities and ensuring Hotspur went into the break with a clean sheet.
Holyhead introduced some fresh legs in the second half, with Abi Hughes and Ava Beckett coming into the game.
The hosts continued to press for a third, with Ellie Murphy going close on a number of occasions.
Captain Efa Hughes produced an outstanding performance in the middle of the park, leading by example and dominating the central midfield throughout the game.
Holyhead also introduced Hannah Brotheridge in goal to replace Lilly Williams, with both keepers doing their part to secure a fantastic clean sheet.
