North East Wales League round-up: Promotion double for Broughton United

ROUND-UP WITH SHAUN BEST

Broughton United secured runners-up in Division One and promotion to Tier 3 in style.

A late flurry of goals – including a second half hat-trick from substitute Jayden Evans got Broughton over the line and with two games to spare.

Added to Evans’ treble, Lewis Jones dished out a double, plus Chad Shelbourne and Callum Webber delivered singles in a 7-3 victory over Ruabon Rovers.

Rhostyllen sewed up third place at the expense of Hawarden Rangers, whose form took a dip at the worst possible time.

Hawarden’s loss at home to champions FC Queen’s Park was their third successive league defeat, plus third 3-2 reverse in a row.

The Park made it 22 victories in a row across all competitions thanks to goals from Ryan Kershaw, Nicky Williams and Tom Freeman.

The Division Two title race will go right down to the wire. It’s winner take all in next weekend’s showdown at the Mold Rec between CPD Sychdyn United and Acton. For Acton it’s simply win or bust, as the hosts will lift the title with a win or a draw.

CPD Gronant looked certainties for promotion from Division Three a couple of weeks back. However, they know nothing other than victory in their final league game will hand AFC Deeside the second promotion spot.

Broughton United’s second string finished their season with a win and guaranteed promotion. They remain at the top of the table, but FC Queen’s Park lie three points back with three games still to play.

The Wrexham outfit will be confident of adding yet another trophy to their season’s impressive haul. Ruthin’s Seth Evans went to the top of the scoring charts after netting his 16th league goal.
