Flint Town United star Rosie Hughes is heading for the States to experience a whole new footballing adventure.

This summer the 20-year-old midfield dynamo flies out to Iowa as a Go 2 College Soccer student where she will represent Hawkeye College in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II.

Rosie has been a Flint player since the team formed in 2022-23 and is the Silkwomen’s record goalscorer with 44 goals in 69 appearances.

She was a key member of the North East Wales Women’s League East Division invincible title winners of 2023-24.

Rosie talked to Grassroots North Wales about her forthcoming venture of the Land of Opportunity.

How did the opportunity to play football in America come about?

RH: I know a few girls who have been out there before or are still out there currently, so I wanted to do something similar and when i came across Jon and go2collegesoccer it made the decision easier as Jon and his company are very helpful.

Will you be studying in the States alongside football? What will you be studying?

RH: Yes I’ll be studying, not 100% sure what at the moment there’s a lot of options to choose from.(I have looked at photography).

What can you tell us about the Hawkeye College soccer team? What type of standard do they play?

RH: Hawkeye is based in Iowa and they play in the NJCAA Division II level, Which is a D2 school I believe.

Have you visited there? If so, did you enjoy the feel of the place?

RH: I haven’t visited the place but I have spoken to a lot of people and had calls with the coach a few times to help make my decision, and Hawkeye felt like the right fit for me.

What are your aims and ambitions in America?

RH: I want to improve as a player in every aspect, enjoy the experience fully and hopefully meet some amazing people.

When will you be flying out?

RH: I’ll be flying out roughly the end of July.

Will you know anyone over there? other Welsh players?

RH: I don’t know any players over there at Hawkeye, but there are a few international students there currently or going there.

Are you a good traveller? Do you think you’ll be fine coping being away from home?

RH: Not the best flyer😂 But I know the long flight is worth what’s on the other side 🙂- I’ll obviously miss my family and friends, but I’m also looking forward to being more independent and meeting new people.

What are your hopes for Flint Town United for the rest of the season?

RH: I just hope we can have a successful and strong end to the season, which allows the team to build for next season 🙂
