Trish Harley scored a dramatic winner for Kinmel Bay with a long range free kick that settled a brilliant contest at Ysgol Dyffryn Conwy.
Bay secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory over CPD Merched Llanrwst in a strong, competitive encounter played over two 30-minute halves.
It was an end-to-end game from the first whistle, with both teams giving 100% throughout.
Both sides started brightly, and it was Llanrwst who created the first real chance, a thunderous strike that flew just wide of the post.
Kinmel Bay responded well, calmly playing the ball out from the back. Right back Steph Farley delivered a long, accurate pass to winger Caitlin Blackwell, who sent a perfect cross into the box. Kerry Williams met it first time, drilling the ball into the back of the net to give Bay the lead in the 15th minute.
Llanrwst came back strongly, working the ball through the middle and putting pressure on the Bay defence, but their chances were repeatedly denied by a solid and organised Kinmel back-line.
The second Bay goal came from a moment of real quality. Just before the halfway line, Bex Gregson played a beautifully weighted through ball to Steph Hughes, who ran onto it and finished confidently into the bottom corner. At half-time, Kinmel Bay held a 2–0 advantage.
Llanrwst started the second half at pace and were rewarded almost immediately. Just two minutes after the restart, Nikita Jones played a lovely pass to Alaw Hughes, who knocked the ball past a defender and fired it into the net to pull a goal back.
Five minutes later, Llanrwst nearly levelled the score, but a brilliant save from goalkeeper Hannah Roberts denied them a second goal. The game continued at a high tempo, with both teams battling hard across the pitch. Bay also went close when their striker Kerry Williams unleashed a thunderous shot, but Llan keeper Seren Hughes held the ball well under pressure.
The next breakthrough came in the 54th minute when a long ball from Non Williams of Llanrwst found Beca Davies, who calmly slotted the ball into the net to make it 2–2 and set up a tense finish.
With both teams pushing for a winner, the decisive moment came when Bay skipper Caitlin Blackwell was tripped by a Llanrwst defender. From just past the halfway line, Trish Harley struck a perfectly weighted free kick that lobbed the keeper and found the net, sealing a dramatic 3-2 win and all three points for Kinmel Bay.
Player of the Match (Llanrwst), as voted by Kinmel Bay, went to Liz Hart, who delivered a solid and composed performance throughout the game.
Player of the Match (Kinmel Bay), voted by Llanrwst, was Kerry Williams for her tireless work rate and pace — likened to the speed of Usain Bolt.
Managers’ Player of the Match (Kinmel Bay) was skipper Caitlin Blackwell, who produced a fine display on the wing, delivering lovely crosses and perfectly timed passes in a standout performance.
Five straight wins for the second-place Lionesses, with goals in their latest victory supplied by Beth Smith, Leanne Williams and Olivia Sutcliffe.
Ten straight wins for unstoppable champions Bay.
Samantha O’Carroll struck twice to make it 12 goals in her last six games and 15 for the season, while Rachel Marland also made the scoresheet with her fifth in four matches.
In their previous outing, Colwyn beat Kinmel Bay 5-0, O’Carroll (3), Marland and Ffion Morris sharing the goals.
A competitive and entertaining match saw the Valkyries battle to a well-earned draw
Llandudno started strongly and took an early lead through Jennifer Davies assisted by Carly Andrews – a great attacking move that set the tempo for the game.
Prestatyn answered back through Caitlin Latham on 10 minutes, but the Valkyries kept pushing and Davies grabbed her second of the night, this time from a smart assist by Hannah Parry.
Jade Davies then brought Dragonhearts back on level terms in the second half.
Both sides continued to create chances, but solid defending and determined midfield work meant the score stayed level through a tense second half. A fair result in a closely fought contest.
