Trearddur Bay stalwart Chris Davies puts record straight over decision to leave club

Trearddur Bay FC stalwart Chris Davies insists his decision to step down as secretary has nothing to do with the weekend incident that brought the club the wrong sort of headlines.
Mr Davies revealed his departure has been on the cards for some time and he had hoped to ‘slip away quietly’ but the negative reaction to happenings in Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at Porthmadog left him wanting to set the record straight.
He also stressed there is no truth in rumours that Trearddur Bay is set to fold following the weekend controversy.
Footage of an alleged assault on Porthmadog player Danny Brookwell in the second half on Saturday at Y Traeth which was captured on video has been seen by millions of viewers on social media.
North Wales Police arrested a 35-year-old man in connection with the incident and have since released him on conditional bail pending further investigation.
Trearddur have apologised to Porthmadog FC and on Sunday revealed Bay player Tom Taylor had been released by the club.
Chris Davies says he and his family have received ‘vile’ messages on line regarding the incident. It is believed other Trearddur Bay officials have also been subjected to abuse.
Speaking on social media, Mr Davies said: “I’ve been bombarded with messages regarding the football and my position at Trearddur Bay, so I want to clarify a few things.
“Firstly, my decision has nothing to do with what happened on the pitch on Saturday, nor the countless vile messages aimed at myself and my family since. Those involved are simply keyboard warriors and not worth the time of day. I hoped to just slip away quietly but once the news is out the rumour mills start unfortunately
“That said, I have stepped down as secretary of the club. This is a decision that’s been coming for quite some time, which is why I don’t think it’s fair to blame the awful events at Saturday’s game for it.”
He added: “I also want to address the other rumours circulating — they are incorrect. The club is not folding, and there are no issues with club personnel. I’m confident, and sincerely hope, that Trearddur Bay will continue to move forward both on and off the field.
“It was a tough decision, as it brings to an end 30 years of association with Trearddur Bay Football Club.
“Over the years I’ve covered almost every role within the club, and we’ve shared some brilliant times and memories that will stay with me forever.
“It’s time for a bit of time out now. I start a new job on Monday, so there’s plenty to look forward to.
“A huge thank you to all the players I’ve had the privilege of working with at both junior and senior level, the fantastic coaches, committee members, sponsors, and everyone else who’s played a part along the journey.
“And of course, thank you to my family, who have sacrificed so much over the years.”
CHRIS DAVIES – A TREARDDUR BAY FC LEGEND

Chris Davies led Trearddur Bay United FC for two successful seasons in the North Gwynedd and Anglesey Sunday League before the club decided to opt for Saturday football in 2008/09.
In their first season they lifted the NWCFA Junior Cup, as well as the Dargie and Thomas and Williams cups on offer within the Anglesey League.
The following campaign they retained the Dargie and scooped the Elias Cup, but the 2010/11 term proved extra special as Trearddur were crowned Anglesey League champions and landed the Dargie, Megan and Thomas and Williams cups to complete a quadruple.
Bay were also beaten finalists in the 2010-11 Junior Cup and Elias Cups and boasted a 112-goal hero in Asa Thomas.
In 2011-12, Bay were promoted to the Gwynedd League and just missed out on the title, finishing runners-up to Penrhyndeudraeth, but added the Cwpan Gwynedd to their collection.
Bay won 10 trophies in four seasons under Davies before he took a break from football in 2012.
It was the perfect sign-off for the manager, who nnounced he was stepping down to concentrate on coaching his young son’s under-seven team.
He left the club in great shape, with successor Mark Williams going on to win the Gwynedd League title as invincibles and the Welsh Alliance championship in 2015-16. Unfortunately the club’s ground did not meet the criteria to elevate to the Cymru Alliance.
Davies returned to joint-manage Trearddur Bay United in 2017-18, but sadly the club reluctantly decided to resign from the Welsh Alliance League for the 2018/19 season due to a player shortage.
They returned in 2019-20 as Trearddur Bay Bulls, amalgamating with Anglesey League champions Bryngwran Bulls.
Chris was chairman of the new club and later became secretary of the renamed Trearddur Bay FC in 2021-22. The club won back-to-back North Wales Coast West League titles to secure promotion to the Tier 3 Ardal North West.
