Report: Mike Smith, Citizens Choice website
On this date 15 years ago Bangor City had reached a first genuine pressure point in their season.
After 16 wins and a draw from their opening 17 league games, Neville Powell’s side had lost 4-2 at Prestatyn Town and 2-0 away to Llanelli four days later.
Suddenly there were doubts creeping in as to whether the Citizens could keep their seemingly unstoppable route to the league title on course.
The answer was an emphatic yes when they bounced back from those two losses with a six-goal thrashing of Haverfordwest County at Farrar Road.
Jamie Reed has transferred to York City, but there was still plenty of firepower left in this squad.
With James Brewerton serving a one-match ban, City kept faith with Clive Williams at right-back and Peter Hoy at centre-half which allowed Dave Morley to screen the defence from central midfield.
Not that it needed much screening from a one-paced County side who lost goalkeeper Lee Idzi to a broken finger on 10 minutes and seemed to play with 10 men thereafter.
Idzi’s replacement was Kirk Huggins, but it was Gareth Elliott who took over in goal.
Within 60 seconds Bangor went ahead as the outstanding Chris Jones slotted home past the stand in keeper.
After 19 minutes, Chris Jones robbed Huggins on half way, chased down the right and crossed for Les Davies to find the net.
Two minutes later, it was 3-0 and all over as Morley headed home from close range.
Alan Bull, by now desperate to get his name on the scoresheet, outpaced Lee Jarman but saw his shot from the left roll against the post and bounce away.
However, a fourth home goal did arrive on 38, and some reward for the hard-working Bull as he netted from the right – and soon after Davies made it five.
HALF TIME 5-0
The second half promised to be more of the same, the fact that it wasn’t owed something to missed chances but credit also to the visitors who refused to lie down or resort to foul play.
County might easily have pulled one back but Jack Christopher missed an open goal from six yards.
On 63 minutes it was 6-0 as Davies flicked on Jones’ corner for the marauding Hoy to head home.
After 73 minutes a triple substitution for Bangor as Sion Edwards, Mark Smyth and Eddie Jebb came on for Jones, Ward and Bull.
The final whistle blew on an emphatic return to form and winning ways for Bangor as the opening 22 fixtures in this new ‘Super 12’ format drew to a close. There was lots of drama still to come!
