Rhyl 1879 are through to the quarter-finals of the Bute Energy Under-16 Girls Welsh Cup after producing a great late fightback to beat local rivals Kinmel Bay.

Sunday’s tie at Rhyl Leisure Centre saw the Lilywhites dominate the first half, but were only able to find the net once by the break after missing a number of scoring opportunities.

Summer Cunliffe scored the home goal on 10 minutes from a Ruby McCavish assist.

After the break Kinmel Bay raised their game, Kitty Jones-Davies equalising with captain Summer Jones creating the chance.

On 62 minutes the visitors grabbed the lead, Jones-Davies again with the goal and the skipper assisting.

Rhyl rallied to equalise on 67, McCavish on target and sub Jessica Sables setting her up with a great through ball.

And the winner arrived for the Lilywhites with 71 on the clock, McCavish netting again from a tremendous assist by Isla Fox-Byrne.

While the first half was all about domination for Rhyl, the second saw them display great teamwork and fighting spirit to get the desired result.

Massive credit to Kinmel Bay, too, for making such a great game of it.
