Top asset to North Wales women’s football – the story of Connah’s Quay Nomads’ first 5 seasons

Considering they have just completed only their fifth season as a football team, Connah’s Quay Nomads women have come a very long way.

Last weekend’s heartbreaking Adran North-South promotion play-off final defeat to Pontypridd United should take nothing away from how well the Nomads have done to be where they are in such a short period of time.

Formed in 2019-20, the Deesiders had a dream first season under the managershio of Sara Hilton and Cassandra Thomas.

Starting in North Wales League Division Two, Nomads went unbeaten in a shortened season due to the worldwide pandemic, finishing runners-up behind Amlwch Town only on the points-per-game method.

Far more impressively, the Quay reached the Welsh Cup semi-finals as a tier 3 side, knocking out Welsh Premier club Port Talbot Town 2-1 along the way.

Because of Covid ending the season in early March, the Nomads never got to play their semi-final against the mighty Swansea City.

Jordan Parry

Although the 2020-21 season was wiped out by the pandemic, there was significant change at Connah’s Quay with manager Hilton moving on and Jordan Parry taking over in January 2021.

Nomads were accepted into the new Tier 2 Adran North league and with a strong squad assembled by Parry, they won their first game 14-1.

With a more experienced Wrexham and eventual champions Llandudno battling it out for the title between them, however, Nomads had to be content with fourth place at the end of 2021-22.

Nonetheless, there was a happy finish to the campaign when they defeated Llandudno 3-1 in the North East Wales FA Challenge Cup Final.

The 2022-23 season saw Wrexham in invincible form, storming to the title with 12 straight wins and earning promotion to the Adran Premier.

2022-23 NEWFA Challenge Cup winners

Nomads, who went unbeaten in their first eight games, finished runners-up in the league and retained the NEWFA Challenge Cup, beating Airbus 3-0 in the final.

They also reached the national Genero Adran Trophy quarter-finals, knocking out Adran Premier side Barry Town United 3-2 on away turf.

The Quay began 2023-24 on fire, winning their first seven matches before a 4-0 home defeat to Felinheli, followed by a 2-0 loss to Llandudno, upset their rhythm.

Nomads finished second again, Llandudno claimed their second title in three seasons, but yet again Parry’s charges were NEWFA Challenge Cup champions, making it a hat-trick of successes when defeating Airbus 5-0 in the final.

Manager Parry embarked on a major squad rebuild for the 2024-25 season.

A number of experienced heads left the club, including retiring former skipper Kylie Jones, and in their place arrived some quality new faces alongside the talented youngsters either earning promotion to or becoming regulars in the senior side.

This time the Nomads were on the money from the word go, winning all 14 league matches during the season, netting 67 goals and conceding just six.

Young captain Polly Wild McGregor was at the forefront, notching 21 league goals, while the capture of Ella Jones from Llandudno added to the team’s strike power.

Nomads clinched the title with a 12-0 victory to make it 12 straight wins, going to complete a perfect set – 42 points out of a possible 42.

Sadly, the season was to end in disappointment, as Nomads lost a 2-0 half time lead in the promotion play-off final, going down 3-2 to Pontypridd United.

Nonetheless, the Quay could take huge positives from a season where they delivered so much.

Surely the dream manager Parry shared when he first joined the club – to reach the Tier 1 Adran Premier – cannot be too far away.

GOALS GALORE!

Nomads have been all about goals from day one.

They won their first-ever match 12-0 against Holywell and since then have hit double figures TEN times.

In just over 100 matches, they have averaged more than 4.5 goals per game.

TOP PLAYERS

Kirstie Kural was player of the match for Connah’s Quay in front of 9,511 – a record attendance for Welsh domestic football – against Wrexham at the Racecourse in March 2023. Picture: SAM EADEN/FAW

Kirstie Kural, a star of the 2021-22 and 2022-23 teams, is the club’s top scorer with 66 goals.
Shannon Hobbs has been an outstanding goal-getter for the club, and would surely have scored many more but for injury problems.
Sienna Strapp was a magnificent young defender who stood out in the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons before leaving to play and study in the USA.
Molly France has been a tremendous goalkeeper for the team, conceding just six goals in 14 matches this season.
Kylie Jones was an inspirational skipper and midfielder who so often drove the team on.
Polly Wild McGregor has been the Adran North standout player in 2024-25, finishing league top markswoman with 21 goals
Anna Marsh was one of Jordan Parry’s finest signings in 2024-25, her midfield play adding real class to the team
Candice Nellist was top goal-getter in the team’s debut season.
Francesca Scott was a prolific scorer in her short spell at Nomads
Elana Harley has proved very capable in a number of positions, especially in 2022-23 when she scored 15 goals
Phoebe Ellis is a dynamic young striker who has so much to offer for the future. Her form at the start of 2023-24 was sensational
