After the heartbreak of relegation from Tier 2 Cymru North last weekend, Bangor 1876 suffered further woe when they lost tonight’s League Cup final, but they certainly gave it a good go against strong favourites Airbus.
Michael Johnston’s side led at half time and the Wingmakers, runners-up in the Cymru North this season, needed two goals after the break to secure the cup.
The game at the Go Goodwins Stadium in Llandudno got underway with drizzle falling.
In the second minute, Bangor had the first chance when Dylan Summers-Jones shot narrowly wide from the edge of the box.
Airbus settled and James Davies went close as the opposition appealed for offside.
Just after the midway point of the opening period, Davies headed narrowly following a quick counter attack.
However, after 28 minutes, Bangor took the lead. Joe Sullivan swung in a cross from the right wing and Liam Morris headed in at the back post.
There were few chances of note in the remainder of the first half, and Bangor went into the break in front.
Three minutes after the restart, Airbus drew level. Jordan Evans played a neat pass that enabled Davies to break into the left side of the box and score from a tight angle.
Minutes after the equaliser, Bangor almost regained the lead. A free-kick from halfway lofted into the box broke for Jake Ellison, who stabbed his shot just wide.
Mark Allen’s side then enjoyed a spell of possession before Summers-Jones tested Keighan Jones with a powerful low shot that the Airbus keeper saved at full stretch.
At the other end, Danny Warren got in behind the Bangor defence. He tried to chip the ball over Carl Jones but couldn’t get enough elevation on his shot and the Bangor keeper saved his attempt.
With just over a quarter of an hour left, Summers-Jones fired in a powerful shot across goal that Jones saved with his feet.
Carl Jones foiled the opposition in similar fashion minutes later after Broughton substitute Sam Baker broke into the right side of the box.
On 77 minutes, Airbus took the lead. Jordan Evans fired in a low shot from 25 yards that went in off the post.
Bangor continued to press, Joe Sullivan and Ryan Stratulis both going close with shots from just outside the box.
Airbus also threatened as the clock ticked down, and Carl Jones again had to show sharp reflexes to deny Baker.
1876 pressed for an equaliser as the rain got progressively heavier. Unfortunately it was not to be as Airbus won to go through to the national final of the tournament next weekend.
